With this book, ANYONE can be a "puppetman"!

This book illustrates every aspect of puppet making, and goes into areas not covered in many books. You don't have to speak "puppet-ease" to know what Pierre is writing about either. And the way the book is written, it is like Pierre is giving you a personal class in puppet-making. I began buying puppets rom Pierre 13 years ago, and have learned a lot from this book, as well as Pierre personally. The bottom line is this ... is it worth the investment of this book (and the materials) to get a message through to children, and hopefully make them laugh? Absolutely!

You Can Make A Professional Puppet

I am not familiar with the author or his work but I was highly disappointed by other books and articles on the subject.
If the cost of the book is preventing you from purchasing it, hopefully this review will change your mind. If you expect to see instructions for making his puppets, you won't. What you will see are solid instructions for making a basic puppet. Once you master the principle of the mouth/face assembly you should be able to understand the many ways you can vary this basic puppet to suit you. This book gives you the basics and your own ingenuity supplies the rest.
You do not need any expensive materials. You don't even need a sewing machine.
These puppets can also be made in assembly line fashion.
If you were to take a class on puppetmaking you would easily spend $40 and not
learn the techniques found in this book.
The only issue I noticed was the erroneous use of the term radius when it should be circumference. You are measuring around the outside edge of the mouth. It is correctly illustrated with arrows, however.

Fantastic book for a beginner

I have in the past looked at other puppet building material and have found that this book is fantastic for a beginner. It is stated that the mouth plate is the hardest part to build, and that was easy. Pierre explains step by step all that is required to build a puppet. It took me three days to create my first ever puppet due to hand stitching the seams. The fact that I can change the patterns whenever I want to create new shaped creations is great. Anyone wanting to get into puppet making - this book is the perfect place to start. Thank you Pierre Gillette for writing this guide.

It's a book that really deserves a place in whatever room you sit in to relax and spend your quiet time. I see many art mediums - including wire - in a whole new way, and that is just what I look for in a book of art. Definitely on of my best book purchases in the past year.

A wonderful book

I saw the Ruth Asawa exhibit at the De Young Museum (in 2007?) and was in awe of the work itself -- especially the hanging wire sculptures and wall wire sculptures -- and of the long devotion that the artist had to her work and to arts education. This book was written to coincide with the De Young show. It is well written, but what really makes it wonderful to look at are the photos of the sculptures and paintings.

I have pulled this book off the shelf many times to gaze at Asawa's art on the pages of this book. It is one of those books that one returns to often.

SWIMMING MADE EASY? YOU MUST BE KIDDING!

Countless millions around the world would love to be able to swim better -- not fast necessarily -- just efficiently and comfortably. But, for virtually all, swimming well enough to enjoy all its benefits remains an elusive goal. Too bad, because swimming can be uniquely beneficial – a non-pounding, joint-friendly fitness activity that exercises the entire body and is suitable for everyone from toddlers to seniors. Being able to swim well is a truly valuable gift – and an essential life skill.

But here's the universal Catch 22: Humans are "hard-wired" to be inefficient in the water. Everything we do instinctively tends to result in clumsy flailing and exhaustion. Swimming really well requires expert instruction; the better the instruction, the more beneficial and satisfying your swimming experience. But traditional swimming instruction is almost universally ineffective, because it focuses on "Human Swimming" technique -- arm and leg churning, which just reinforces our inbred inefficiencies. As a result, "average" swimmers can only watch "good" swimmers with envy, assuming it takes "talent" -- or endless training -- to swim that well.

WHAT'S HOLDING YOU BACK? IT'S THE WATER, NOT YOUR FITNESS LEVEL. Lap-based approaches to swimming improvement are doomed to fail because, unless you're efficient to start with, more laps simply make your "struggling skills" more durable. If you can walk, run, or cycle a mile or more, you're fit enough to swim a similar distance. A lack of "swimming fitness" isn’t why you run out of gas. It’s the way your body interacts with water. Chapter 1 outlines five simple skills guaranteed to help you work with, not against, the water.

HOW YOU CAN SWIM LIKE AN OLYMPIAN. Your instincts tell you to swim faster by churning your arms faster, but the world’s best swimmers are faster because they travel MUCH farther with every stroke than you do, not because they move their arms faster. NO MORE SINKING FEELING. Survival instincts make us want to stay on top of the water: As a result virtually every swimmer spends most of their energy trying not to sink. They think they’re pulling and kicking to move forward, but, in reality, their arms and legs are mainly occupied with fighting "that sinking feeling." But, the fact is, our bodies are supposed to sink.. Good balance and body position is the art of sinking in a horizontal position. Chapter 3 tells you how.

SWIM "TALLER," SWIM EASIER. Most swimmers believe that "stroke technique" means "how you push water back with your hands." Want to swim better? Tweak your armstroke. Want to swim faster? Put more muscle into it. But, hydro-dynamically, the most important thing you can do with your hands is use them to lengthen your bodyline. A longer bodyline reduces drag. Chapter 4 explains how to swim "taller."

DON'T FIGHT THE WATER, SLIP THROUGH IT. The gospel according to coaches says: "Swimming is hard." The price of speed is "more" and "harder." The gospel is wrong: The one non-negotiable, unavoidable, unyielding limiter of speed is resistance, not your capacity for work. No workout, wet or dry, can overcome the drag created when you try to bully your way through the water. But smart, strategic choices you make in how to "pierce" the water as you swim can reduce drag dramatically. Chapter 5 tells you exactly how to become more "slippery" and Chapters 7 and 8 explain how to generate effortless propulsion.

A STRONG KICK IS ESSENTIAL. Swimming instructors always start by having you kick and kick and kick some more. No wonder everyone thinks a powerful kick is the key to swimming well -- and then spends countless hours on kickboards vainly pursuing it. In fact, kickboard training does nothing for your swimming, and the best kick is the one requiring the least effort. Chapter 8 explains how to integrate an effortless kick seamlessly with fluent body motion.

These examples are drawn from just the first half the book. The second half offers a detailed plan, with progressive and sequential how-to steps, that will allow any individual to become their "own best swimming coach."

I have been a coach for several years and this book really hit home. I really enjoyed learning about the balance of our bodies in the water and how we can better maneuver ourselves thru the h2o. Highly recommend this book for any level of swimmer and/or coach. I will definitely use these techniques in practice for my swimmers and even with myself (masters swimmer).

The Rosary is a novel by Florence L. Barclay. It was first published in 1909 by G.P. Putnam's Sons and was a bestselling novel for many years running, reaching the number one spot in 1910. She was born Florence Louisa Charlesworth in Limpsfield, Surrey, England, the daughter of the local Anglican rector. One of three girls, she was a sister to Maud Ballington Booth, the Salvation Army leader and co-founder of the Volunteers of America. When Florence was seven years old, the family moved to Limehouse in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. In 1881, Florence Charlesworth married the Rev. Charles W. Barclay and honeymooned in the Holy Land, where, in Shechem, they reportedly discovered Jacob's Well, the place where, according to the Gospel of St John, Jesus met the woman of Samaria (John 4-5). Florence Barclay and her husband settled in Hertford Heath, in Hertfordshire, where she fulfilled the duties of a rector's wife. She became the mother of eight children. In her early forties health problems left her bedridden for a time and she passed the hours by writing what became her first romance novel titled The Wheels of Time. Her next novel, The Rosary, a story of undying love, was published in 1909 and its success eventually resulted in its being translated into eight languages and made into five motion pictures, also in several languages. According to the New York Times, the novel was the No.1 bestselling novel of 1910 in the United States. The enduring popularity of the book was such that more than twenty-five years later, Sunday Circle magazine serialized the story and in 1926 the prominent French playwright Alexandre Bisson adapted the book as a three-act play for the Parisian stage. Florence Barclay wrote eleven books in all, including a work of non-fiction. Her novel The Mistress of Shenstone (1910) was made into a silent film of the same title in 1921. Her short story Under the Mulberry Tree appeared in the special issue called "The Spring Romance Number" of the Ladies Home Journal of 11 May 1911.

A Timeless Romance

Written in 1910, THE ROSARY still proves to be a very successful story in the year 2003. By today's standards, it may be described as quaint but still very enjoyable. The writing is lyrical, descriptive, and charming; the love storyline is ageless.
The story revolves around Jane Champion and Garth Dalmain. Jane is talented, smart, good-natured and independent. However she is a unique heroine because unlike the female protagonists in many romance stories, Jane is described as homely-looking. She is also older than the hero, Garth - a vibrant, energetic, gifted, and extraordinarily handsome man.
The title refers to a popular song written in 1898 by composers Ethelbert Nevin and Robert Cameron Rogers. Garth realizes that he is in love with Jane after hearing her sing the song at a public performance. When he declares his love to Jane and wants to marry her, she turns him down, although she also loves him; Jane doesn't believe that Garth will be truly happy living with a plain-looking woman for the rest of his life. Broken-hearted, the two part ways but reunite, later, under sad and unexpected circumstances.
How do Jane and Garth finally accept each other? Writer Florence Barclay writes a story that makes you want to keep reading till you find out how the lovers reunite.
I first heard about THE ROSARY, a few years ago, on a T.V. program that reported a true story of a woman who always mentioned the book. A relative of hers decided to search for the then out-of-print book and give it to her as a surprise gift. Through what could only be described as a miracle, the relative eventually found the book. Fascinated with the story of the woman's attachment to the book, I decided to look for it. I couldn't find the book anywhere. Years later, I happened to mentioned THE ROSARY to a friend. Guess where she found it? On Amazon.com! I think it's great that anyone can find the book (and many other things) here!
If you like stories like Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion, and Sense and Sensibility, you'll enjoy this tale. Reading THE ROSARY is like taking a breath of fresh air.

THE ROSARY AND OTHER BARCLAY BOOKS

This is not a review of THE ROSARY, but I have some knowledge of Florence Barclay and a list of more of her books. As a result of reading THE ROSARY in the mid 80's, I became a devoted Florence Barcly fan and have traveled to England several times, two of which I searched out some of her childhood haunts, and also homes that she owned when she was older.
Florence Barclay was born December 2, l862, in a little Surrey village in England. Her father, the Reverend Samuel Charlesworth, was Rector of the Anglican Perish there. When Florence was l8 years old, she married The Reverend Charles Barclay and took on all the responsiblities of a Rector's wife, including teaching a Bible class of l00 men, and playing the organ for services in the church, where she and her husband remained for 40 years. She bore and raised 8 children.
In her biography, she is said to have had a "firm faith in God, and in man's possibilities, which tended to bring out the best in others, the most joyous, the most true. It was precisely all this--her personality in short--which broke forth in her books and won for her a vast reading public that looked upon her as a friend."
THE ROSARY sold one million copies, and was translated into 8 languages. This was a remarkable number of books to sell in a day before high tech methods of marketing were developed. Florence Barclay died on March l0, l921, on her fortieth wedding anniversary.

Another Jane Eyre

Yes, the heroine is named Jane, she is plain, sensible, and very bright, though this one is exceedingly musical (Bronte's Jane was not). The hero is Garth, gorgeous, bright (perhaps not as mature as Jane and a bit more self-centered), and highly interested in the heroine, especially after she sings. Such begins the verbal tug-of-war brimming with wit and sexual tension.
Both have feelings for the other though Jane's homeliness is the obstacle that prevents immediate union. Garth, however, meets with an unfortunate accident which renders him, low and behold, blind. Convenient, eh? Garth's pride replaces Jane's looks as the romantic obstruction. What ensues is a heart-squeezing chain of events which have the reader rooting for the match like a ridiculous cheerleader.
While profoundly romantic, don't expect an x-rated sex scene. Afterall, the romance is that which preceeds the sex.

A Note on Translations...

I will not delve into the brilliant work of nascent existentialism that Dostoevsky's "Notes From Underground" represents as there are plenty of reviews who have already done that for me. I do want to help customers in choosing a translation out of the many that are available, as there doesn't seem to be much to guide one through them here.

Perhaps the best translation I've found to date is that by Andrew MacAndrew, available in a Signet Classics edition. MacAndrew's prose has a vigor and modern clarity that truly make this work speak to the reader - the Underground Man truly comes to life as a living, breathing character with a relevance and immediacy.

For all the praise the Pevear/Volokhonsky translations have gotten, I do not think they necessarily surpass the efforts of those who came before them in this particular instance. Although a big fan of their Tolstoy, the Dostoevsky comes off somewhat comparatively muted.

Compare MacAndrew's rendering of the opening words in which the Underground Man introduces himself:

"I'm a sick man... a mean man. There's nothing attractive about me. I think there's something wrong with my liver. But, actually, I don't know a damn thing about my sickness; I'm not even too sure what it is that's ailing me."

To Pevear/Volokhonsky's:
"I am a sick man... I am a wicked man. An unattractive man. I think my liver hurts. However, I don't know a fig about my sickness and am not sure what it is that hurts me."

Of the two, MacAndrew's Underground Man obviously speaks a more contemporary English. I am aware that this has actually been a criticism of his. In fact, many readers might actually be put off by the brusque and terse take or find it even slightly disturbing. Purists will also doubtless find much to annoy them about MacAndrew's more interpretive (as opposed to literal) approach to translation. The Pevear/Volokhonsky actually appeared in 1993, about 30 years after MacAndrew's. There's nothing particularly wrong with their version. It has a stately, nuanced charm and is apparently much truer to Dostoevsky's original in the literal sense (to the point of translating his flaws and idiosyncrasies). But personally, as a reader, I just got much more out of reading the MacAndrew translation. You immediately get a taste of the angst of this character from MacAndrew's terse, flippant diction.

Two others to take note of: The classic Constance Garrett translation can still be found in a cheap Barnes and Noble Classics edition, along with a good selection of Dostoevsky's shorter works. Garnett's haphazard, hasty, and somewhat reckless method of translation has been much criticised, as has her quaintly Victorian diction. Mirra Ginsberg's translation in the Bantam Classics series matches the Pevear/Volokhonsky translation almost word-for-word, although I find the wording where she deviates to actually be better overall.

Best Book on our Secret War Yet!

A pleasure to read! This book is superbly written, full of new things I didn't know, especially about the Obama administration and how the killing continues under his watch, illegally penetrating foreign spaces to kill "the enemy." Remember when Bush said we'd go after terrorists and that "those who harbor them" will be under the gun as well? The book reveals that our government didn't hold Pakistan to that standard; they helped the Taliban right from the beginning in 1996 or so, and this book shows they also helped fighters going against our troops in Afghanistan. Are we finally done with Pakistan? One would hope so. Easy to read, a joy to read, actually, with major emphasis on the CIA and the Pentagon, the in-fighting and competition, and how the drone has taken the place of the heavy artillery. Maybe we can finally start cutting back on new weapons systems. I would recommend this book to ANYONE interested in our foreign policy.

The CIA gets what it wants - to be a killing machine.

This book is about the fundamental changes that have occurred in the CIA and the US govt as to how to wage war against non-state enemies in the post 9/11 world. In presenting a composite picture of these changes, the author shows how the roles of the CIA and the Pentagon have overlapped and even switched. He raises moral and ethical questions associated with conducting 'war' on a country without ever declaring 'war', killing 'enemies' in foreign lands by remotely piloted drones and outsourcing espionage and killing to private firms and mercenaries. These are thought-provoking questions to ponder about.

Mark Mazetti traces the philosophy of the CIA over the past fifty years as follows: In the 1960s, the CIA was allowed to carry out assassinations overseas as part of its job. In the 70s, President Ford reversed all that, forbidding the CIA from being a killing machine and instead making it focus on intelligence gathering and spying as its primary job. However, 9/11 changed all that yet again, with the CIA getting into the business of tracking down Islamic extremists, incarcerating and torturing them overseas. The adverse reaction to this practice and the Congressional indictments that followed, made them choose the silver bullet of killing terrorists abroad again through remote-controlled drones without opting for on-the-ground assassination squads. In doing so, the American government has outsourced the basic functions of spycraft to private contractors, making the American way of war morph from clashes between tank columns - into the shadows, outside the declared war zones. In the process, the constraints on who can be killed, where they can be killed and when they can be killed have been conveniently blurred.

The author says that the challenge of Al-Qaeda has led the Pentagon, the CIA and the US Govt into paradoxical and inconsistent positions. The Clinton administration, though opposed to the CIA carrying out the assassination of Osama bin Laden through hit-squads, was okay with killing him through Tomahawk missiles. In the same way, President Obama, though a liberal, finds no contradiction in embracing and expanding the killing program through the drones, which has resulted in the deaths of substantial number of civilians, non-combatants and even allies, apart from suspected terrorists.

Mark Mazetti clearly believes that the CIA should not stray away from its primary mission of spying and gathering intelligence. He attributes this 'straying' as the reason for the CIA getting blind-sided by the Arab Spring events in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya in 2010-12. Though it is tempting to agree with this, I remember reading in Tim Werner's book, 'The Legacy of the Ashes', about the CIA getting blindsided by many world events even before 9/11. For example, the CIA did not foresee India going for an atomic blast in 1998. Nor did they foresee the sudden collapse of Communism in 1990-92 or even the invasion of Kuwait by Saddam Hussein in 1991. The CIA has the image of an all-powerful God-like entity in the eyes of developing countries. However, in reality, it is probably just a massive bureaucracy struggling to make sure that its left-hand is aware of what the right-hand is doing.

I found the chapters on the CIA's role in Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia quite absorbing and revelatory. The sections on Pakistan show that the US got quite fed up with the 'double game' of the ISI and the Pak army, resulting in giving full rein to the CIA to violate the country's borders. Years before the assault on Osama bin Laden in 2011, the Navy Seals had landed inside Pakistan and conducted operations in Damadola in the Bajaur agency without the Pak army ever being aware of it. This seems to have given the confidence for the later invasion to kill OBL. The US never informed President Musharraf of special operations that were carried out inside Pakistan. During the 2005 earthquake in Kashmir, the CIA slipped in many covert officers into Pak without the ISI's knowledge under the cover of relief efforts. The book paints a dismal picture of Pak-US relations at all levels. There are fascinating accounts of how the CIA pursued al-Shabab in Somalia and killed the American citizen Anwar al-Aulaki in Yemen.

After reading the book, I am compelled to think that this spree of 'killing by remote control' could end dangerously, similar to making the atomic bomb and waging cyber-warfare. The atomic bomb was seen as a way to bring fascism to its end in Japan without loss of of American lives. But the nuclear weapon has since proliferated and has come to threaten all of us. Similarly, internet viruses like Stuxnet were deployed towards a 'bloodless' destruction of Iran's nuclear program. But, it also got out of control, resulting in more cyber espionage and state-sponsored viruses threatening the highly-networked infrastructures of the advanced industrial nations. We are likely to see in future many countries following the 'US lead' in waging war (without declaring war) and killing citizens of another country through remote controlled drones, exacerbating tensions among nations and power-blocks.

It is possible that the US has let another dangerous genie out of the bottle.

I was excited to receive the book and get started as the subject matter has always been a favorite of mine. Unfortunately, my expectations were way too high. Lots of detail in this book, but in my opinion the author was writing with a clear objective: to present a negative view of the CIA. The author started with that conclusion and then presented information to support it. He points all of the failures and few successes. It's an extremely biased perspective in my opinion. Personally, I wouldn't mind an adoring account of the CIA, but not this.

I would not recommend unless you're looking for a book with this viewpoint as described above.

In the spirit of Bourgois, let me introduce myself. I'm a suburban white woman with a background in history. I was assigned to read this book for an "Aspects of Deviance" Sociology class. Bourgois' approach to his research makes a lot of sense to me since I was taught (as a would-be historian) to take into account all backgrounds and prejudices of the author, the reader, and the characters (if applicable). Perhaps something that makes the read so easy is that the author so willingly points out his own thoughts and biases. This is not to say that our job as readers becomes only to sit back and enjoy the story, but it makes it easier to filter through the author's analyses in order to modify the conclusion for yourself. Importantly, he liberally uses transcriptions of actual dialogues with the East Harlem crack dealers whom he befriends over three-plus years. Having that kind of access to the source of his research is invaluable in judging the situation for yourself.
As for the content, I can think of no better way for me to get a glimpse into that kind of life and neighborhood. One of the only other books that comes close is an autobiography by Nathan McCall called Makes Me Wanna Holler. This book covers his experience going from a gang member in the 1970's to "goin' legit" as a journalist and often revisiting the demons of his past.
Because the author discusses the idea of objectivity and various definitions of it, I want to mention one movie for anyone interested in better understanding how biases affect otherwise factual accounts. Courage Under Fire is a good example of understanding how various views, motives, and biases color different people's accounts. As much as we would like it, we can never practically obtain the kind of completely unbiased, third-person view of a situation as we are given at the end of the movie, but, with practice, you can come close. This is not to say that you should be completely detached from what you read or see, but that you don't have to get bogged down in the views of others.

So compelling. So inspiring. So poignant. I'm so glad I read this book! How beautifully Bourgois is able to convey the issues of poor, inner-city members who give into temptation in order to do what they feel necessary for sufficient income and for basic human dignity. Few books have been able to articulate these arguments with such grace. Highly recommended to those who wish to better understand their brothers and sisters with whom it can otherwise be a challenge to relate!

This is like an anthropologists memoire. If I had known that I might not have started reading. Boy and I glad I did. It is a fascinating account of Puerto Ricans in NY city in the crack epidemic, their lives, their culture and their sorrows.
