Book is excellent and hard to get. i was glad to see it on Amazon. My only gripe is the format--i would have preferred a HARDCOPY Edition for my collection. Hardcopy or not , this was a must for me.

An extensive analysis of the Maya pantheon

Worth every cent of its price, this probably is the most comprehensive study of Classic and Post-Classic Maya deities currently available. It covers all gods of the revised Schellhas list with an overview of the important characteristics, symbolism, assorted associations and temporal occurence, and also includes a chapter on deities later imported from Mexico. But be warned: This book assumes quite a bit of prior knowledge, and therefore features passages in all probability undecipherable for the beginner. Books you should at least have read before taking on this volume are "The Gods and Symbols of Ancient Mexico and the Maya", "Aztec and Maya Myths" (both also by Taube), "An Introduction to the Study of the Maya Hieroglyphs" by S.G. Morley and Dennis Tedlock's "Popol Vuh"- translation, with "The Ancient Maya" (Robert J. Sharer) and "Breaking the Maya Code" (Michael D. Coe) also recommended. Due to this un-populist approach, it's a rather scientific (read: slightly dry) read, but the amount of facts presented here reduces this to a minor quibble. So, if you already know your tzolkin from your haab, and your Cholan from your Yucatec, and now want to expand your knowledge of the Maya pantheon, this is the book to read. Highly recommended.

good read

“The Replacement” is a book that I really enjoyed. It brings to the surface two parallel stories: Anna’s and Mickey’s. Anna is a grown woman, who lives with her son but who is so narcissistic and buried in her own career and personal needs, she seldom cares about what her son is doing. Her mother, Marianne, is the one who takes care of the boy most of the time, so when the woman goes missing, Anna’s got more than one problem on her hands.
On the other hand, Mickey is about the sweetest kid you can imagine. Sadly, his father left him when his mother got sick and the woman became an alcoholic, abusing Mickey both mentally and physically. I really like how the author describes Mickey’s feelings; it gives us a different perspective on how an abused child thinks and feels. Because of an ugly episode that I won’t spoil for you, Mickey ends up doing something bad.
To me, it was pretty obvious from chapter 5 how Anna and Mickey’s stories are connected, but I still enjoyed reading the book because of its characters that show you just how complex the human mind really is.

It’s not the best book I’ve read

It’s not the best book I’ve read, but considering that this is an indie author and this is her first shot at a thriller, I actually enjoyed it. The plot is similar to what you’d find in a commercial thriller movie, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. I found the story to be shorter than I wanted, I’d like the author to jam even more action into a novel of this genre. The story line is credible considering the multitude of psychopaths that are out there.
What I particularly liked is how the author describes Mickey’s childhood. The first chapters that bring forward Mickey’s life are quite emotional, maybe too emotional for a thriller. It’s amazing to see how a child can stay positive in such a difficult situation. It’s quite inspiring even to adults such as myself. I feel like the action at the ending could be longer, it all seems to be happening so fast. I also wish the author would have made a more in-depth analysis on the true reasons behind the killer’s behavior. However, if you’re an experienced reader of thrillers, it all makes sense.

Interesting novel worth reading

I am not an avid reader of thrillers, but I did enjoy this book. It is not especially innovative in its plot, but it will keep you reading.
The characters of Anna and Mickey are well fleshed out, despite that the book is relatively short for this type of story. There are some plot twists, but I won't spoil that. I was able to see where the ending is going, but maybe that is just me. I don't know if this book will be satisfying to the more experienced readers of this types of stories, but I mostly liked it.

Most of what you've heard about Enron just touches the surface of some very intriguing questions: Were Ken Lay and Jeff Skilling ruthless monsters or just ordinary people? What could have driven them to commit the kinds of actions that eventually led to the complete collapse of one of the world's most acclaimed and admired companies? Denis Collins's book actually shows that the seeds of the actions that ultimately brought the Enron giant to its knees may not be that uncommon in business organizations!

There was nothing inevitable about Enron's collapse, nor was it something that happened overnight. Decent Map

I found that this map was not very detailed and missed some of the roads. I had a driver who knoew the short routes and roads, remember that Sri Lanka is currently undergoing a major construction and infrastructure improvement currently so a lot of roads are being build or spruced so this map maybe dated

Joy McCorriston is Associate Professor of Anthropology at The Ohio State University. She has published forty academic articles and book chapters on the origins of food production, the development of agricultural economies through the Bronze Age and Southern Arabian prehistory. She currently leads the Ancient Human Social Dynamics in Arabia Project in Oman.

Excellent review of Middle Eastern patterns of pilgrimage/household stability

This book is a comprehensive and insightful analysis of an important but often neglected topic in studies of Middle-Eastern cultures: specifically, the persistence over many millennia of traditions of household organization and functions ("habitus") and pilgrimages in the Arabian Peninsula and adjacent areas.

The author analyzes pilgrimage as it has been practiced during the Muslim era, but also in much earlier times and forms. She defines pilgrimage as "...a journey to a sacred place to participate in a system of sacred beliefs" (p. 19). Prof. McCorriston argues that archaeology and the social sciences have been so narrowly focused on cultural change, that they have not given sufficient attention to stability and continuity in ancient cultures. In considering this issue she addresses fundamental questions about the explanation and understanding of the past in general.

Prof. McCorriston's prose is clear and a pleasure to read, and the book is a model of organization. Her analytical approach is primarily based on post-structuralist concepts and postmodernism in general. This approach, which was derived mainly from contemporary European philosophers, is beginning to have increasing impact on American archaeology. She considers, for example, forms of household activities and pilgrimages to be "Ethnoepochal Meta-Structures." She compares the meta-structures of Arabia and Mesopotamian. The origins and developmen of this epistemological perspective derives from such post-structuralists as Braudel, Bourdieu, Hodder, Giddens, Tilly, et al. Some archaeologists reject this form of interpretation of the archaeological record. Nonetheless, they too will find much of value in this work. The author has carefully researched the physical evidence of thousands of years of pilgrimage in the Middle East and illustrated these data with informative graphs, photographs, drawings and tables. This book should also attract non-academic readers interested in Middle Eastern cultures in general. She enlivens her complex theoretical discussions with anecdotes from her fieldwork and personal interactions with the contemporary Arabians she encountered.

Prof. McCorriston reviews and rejects most previous attempts (e.g., Turner) to explain pilgrimage practices in terms of the functions pilgrimages play in various societies. She discusses in detail, however, the economic activities that are often associated with pilgrimages. Some scholars have argued that interactions between nomadic pastoralists and settled agriculturalists played an important role in initiating the evolution of ancient civilizations in Mesopotamia (Robert McC. Adams), China (Owen Lattimore), and elsewhere. Other functional arguments have related pilgrimage to the benefits of reinforcing the bonds between the individual and his or her larger social and political culture. Evolutionary biologists (e.g., Lewontin) have described the many pitfalls of trying to identify the focus of selection in explaining the physical features and behaviours of our distant ancestors in terms of what "need" was met by the selection for this or that trait. Explaining pilgrimage practices in functional terms involves the same problem. Pilgrimage practices appear to have originated early in human history, long before agriculture and cities appeared, and they continue in most of today's world. To explain and understand this phenomenon's origins (prehistoric gatherings for mate and materials exchange?), however, we have only meager archaeological evidence and arguments based on analogies. We do not know with any precision, for example, if ancient Middle Eastern pilgrimage patterns varied over time in concert with changes in the larger polities in Mesopotamia. But the author has made good use of what little evidence we do have,to try to explain these cultural continuities and traditions.

The author's conception of "Explaining Continuity" (p. 8-10) is an elegant essay. Like most post-structuralists, the author ascribes an independent causal role to ideological elements (cf. Marx) in cultural adaptation and change, while accepting the loose limitations that ecology and historical context places on cultural change. She argues that "...orientation toward meta-structure and long-term continuities supplies a new focus on periods and cultural histories ill-served by the social sciences" (p.234). The "Conclusions" chapter of this book neatly summarizes the problem of connecting meta-structures to the archaeological record. Although Prof. McCorriston's theoretical orientation differs from the positivism and empiricism associated with traditional American archaeology, she provides a lot of "hard" data relevant to her analysis.

This book is far more readable and informative than any book I've read that takes a similar theoretical position. Prof. McCorriston has written a book that should be read by every archaeologists, even those whose geographical focus is different from hers. It is an important contribution to current discussions of archaeological epistemologies.
