Greece is a companion volume to the paperback edition of Rome, and with it comprises the greater part of Rostovzeff's major work, A History of the Ancient World. From the appearance of prehistoric Aegean settlements, through the rise of the city states, to the diffusion of Hellenistic culture after the conquests of Alexander, Greek history is recounted and set in the larger perspective of ancient Mediterranean civilization. Told from the point of view of historian, archaeologist, and connoisseur, Greece is not only an exact study but also an appreciation of that civilization which "still lives, as the foundation of all the chief manifestations of modern culture."
For this paperback edition, Elias J. Bickerman has completed a new and comprehensive bibliography and emended the text and chronology in accordance with contemporary research. The maps have been redrawn to conform with recent scholarship. The thirty-seven plates include photographs of newly discovered material as well as many illustrations retained from the original edition.

Good read, but a bit hard to follow
By That One Guy
Personally I like ancient history, such as Greece, Egypt; all that stuff you learn in middle school, so it's not too bad for a textbook. (In my case, it's a textbook.) Anyways, there is one problem though. Like an average American, we don't really know much about Greece, maybe just names, Athens, Sparta, Plato, Homer and the film 300. This book gets into depth with the material, such as other tribes/civilizations (ex: Dorians, Lydia....) or places such as the Anatolian coast, Isthmus...it goes on. But that's not too bad, since you can just look it up.
What bothers me the most is that the pictures intrude the text. For exam[PICTURE OF A VASE, PICTURE OF A TEMPLE]ple. See what I mean? They aren't bad when they take up 1/4 of the page, but sometimes you are in the middle of a sentence, or word, and bam: full two pages of pictures. It's even worse when you want to read what the picture's about. Then you'll definitely forget what you were reading before.

Too harsh on Greek democracy
By HH
In dealing with Greece, Rostovtzeff stresses the economic, social, and cultural development and has considered the political history chiefly in its relations to these. That he has done this is on the one hand a blessing: the reader compensated for the omission of many petty battles and obscure politicians by the clearer insight which the author gives us into the growth and character of Hellenic and Hellenistic civilization; and few specialists, whether historians or classicists, will fail to find very much that is stimulating and suggestive in such a survey as is here presented. Not everyone will agree with Rostovtzeff on all points, especially in the absence of all citations of authority; but, however much one may here and there dissent from the views expressed, there will have been found food for thought on nearly every page. To this reviewer it seems, for example, that Rostovtzeff is somewhat unjust to the Greek democracies, which he holds chiefly responsible for the failure of the Greeks to achieve national unity. "Democracy in Greece," he says, "proved unable to create a form of government which should reconcile the individualism characteristic of the nation with the conditions essential to the existence of a powerful state, namely, civic discipline and a preference of the general interest, even when it appeared to oppose the interest of particular persons or classes or even communities." One wonders why the criticism was limited to democracy, for surely in this respect the oligarchies did no better, and the Athenian empire, though it fell lamentably short of the ideal, came nearer to it than did the Spartan empire which followed.

Superb Introduction to the Greek world
By Robert Waddell
This history by Michael Rostovtzeff is very readable. He describes a huge amount of Greek society in a cohesive and understandable text with a humanising approach acknowledging the known and the unknown with regards to the written and archeological record.
