Fantastic

This is my first time reading Octavia Butler's work; all four were engaging, but I found Clay's Ark to be the least, for me. I like the sweeping history caught up in tight writing, the science easily understandable in the fiction.

Not as good as Lillith's Brood trilogy

I read The Lillith's Brood trilogy first and absolutely loved it. This series of 4 books was good but not as good as Lilith's Brood. There were gaps in time and story that were not made clear in the story telling. After finishing all the stories, I learned that the last story, the Patternmaster was written first and the others were prequels, which makes sense after the fact. Too often you don't get to know what happens to characters you've grown to care about. You are just left hanging from one story to the next since each one takes place decades if not hundreds of years later. The story was engaging enough to keep me going, but at times confusing and frustrating.

Butler is overlooked. There are some reused plot devices from the Xenogenesis series, (or vice-versa) but they certainly don't detract from the story.
