About the Author
Patrick Jones is an award winning science fiction and fantasy artist and teacher. His work is collected and published worldwide and his client list includes companies such as Disney, Lucasfilm, and Roc books. Boris Vallejo is an iconic science fiction and fantasy artist whose incredible oil paintings appeared on the covers of magazines such as Eerie, Creepy, and The Savage Sword of Conan, inspiring a whole generation of young artists. He has produced decades worth of fantasy art and is admired the world over as one of the all-time greats of the genre. He lives in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Informative and motivating book focused on a very specific painting process

One of the downsides to the more technical and classical approach to oil painting, is that you rarely get to see someone work through an entire multi-session painting, let alone explain their objectives, struggles, and ideas along the way. Patrick Jones gives us the chance to experience this entire process for quite a number of his paintings, and it is incredibly enlightening. This book is narrow in focus, which does a great job of reinforcing the most important points about Patrick's painting process The actual subjects of the paintings are superfluous, as the techniques can be applied to any subject, so long as you are interested in this particular painting methodology. I highly recommend this book, it is very informative, and quite motivating.
Who this book is for.
- Someone interested in a structured, and classical oil painting technique that take a lot of time over many sessions, but yield realistic results that leverage the unique properties of oil paints.
Who this book is not for.
- Someone exclusively interested in direct or alla prima painting techniques. Stylized approaches to painting that leverage the texture of thick paints, and don't lend themselves well to layering.
There is material in this book that is universal to all painters, but the vast majority of this book is highly focused on a particular method of oil painting. I definitely don't want to tell anyone they shouldn't get this book, just know what you are in for before you purchase it. These same techniques could be carried over to acrylics as well, though it would require some adaptation.

A fantastic book by a great artist and teacher.

This is the BEST book I have read on the subject. Period. Nothing else comes close. Patrick goes into great detail explaining both how and why he paints with both traditional and water mixable oils. He even touches on both digital painting and drawing. A side note, he has a book coming soon on drawing and anatomy as well. I can't wait for that one. Patrick's method is very traditional, and it is not fast or easy. It is thorough, considered and meticulous. At the same time it leaves room for spontaneity and inspiration. Not everyone will want to paint this way, but I promise you, you will learn much by trying it, and using his method does not restrict you to getting his results. I love this book!
I must, however, comment on Amazon's delivery service. I have been buying on Amazon for a very long time, and have lived at and had my orders delivered to the same address all of those years with very few difficulties. This order was delivered by a company I was unfamiliar with and I cannot recommend them. My initial order was delivered on a Sunday evening at 8 PM. My delivery address is a construction company located on a very busy commercial street in Chicago wit business hours from 8:00AM until 5:30PM six days a week. The front door opens directly onto the street. On my block there are two pizza restaurants, a breakfast restaurant, a bar, an art gallery, a fitness center and a convenience store. It is a
busy street with lots of foot traffic. The package was left on the sidewalk in front of the door. It doesn't take a genius to guess that it was gone by the morning when the business opened. To their great credit Amazon replaced my order at no charge and it was delivered promptly. In the evening, after business hours, to a neighbor, in a doorway that they rarely use. I was in the process of requesting a third delivery when the neighbor brought the package by three days after it was left. If Amazon had either a requirement of a signature for delivery or a way to request delivery during business hours this would not have happened. If the delivery person had used common sense and realized they were leaving the order where it was likely to be stolen. This would not have happened. I hope this is a helpful suggestion.

A Brilliant Compostition

Awesome book on techniques, showing step by step sampling. I've read a couple of reviews that were obtuse about the use of scantily clad women (some call them bare naked, but those apparently aren't actually looking at the detail) and are obviously not judging the work on any viable criteria--such as color choice, blending, glazing or layering. If you expect to see fantasy art without revealing suits (on men and women), you're new to the genre. Likewise, if you expect to see art without traces of either Frank Frazetta or Boris Vallejo inspiration in them. Jones's use of color is purely his own. As you look at his work, his style becomes more and more apparent. Yes it has nods to those who inspired him, just as Frazetta's work nods at N.C. Wyeth, Franklin Booth, Howard Pyle and so many others. Jones knows the traditional techniques, tells a poignant story with each subject, and shows your nearly every single step to achieve your own style with these techniques. I prize this book as much as my Loomis books.
