Good explanation of the subject.

I was interested in the concept that interested our "Founding Fathers". I too find, after MUCH "seeking" that "revealed" Religions are just recycled myths (like from the Legends of Gilgamesh") and scams used to control the masses.
I'm not completely on board with Deism but someplace between this and maybe "Agnostic"? Or maybe why label spirituality? I just know it is some coincidence that most faithful just happen to be born into "the one true religion". Seems more likely that family and peer pressure leads to the indoctrination?
I know I've had my share of those. So I made a point of reading ALL the major books of faith and have experienced a lot of worships/services/masses, in the U.S and worldwide. this book helped me on my path of attempting to figure out this deep subject. Still, I would never claim to have specific insight on the afterlife and those that do turn my stomach... "All will be revealed"

Am I a closet Deist?

I am new to the concept of Deism and was looking for an insightful discussion of what Deism is, and why. This book seems to dwell mostly on the "lies and misconceptions of 'revealed' religions" rather than exploring the philosophy of Deism and explaining why it should be considered conceptually valid. Simply stating that Deism is only a belief that a superior intelligence must have created everything that we don't understand, for some unknown purpose, and everything else can or has to be empirically proveable based on this assumption, is not very intelectually satisfying. I must admit the book does make me feel a bit better about my personal rejection of a lot of the tenets and illogical stuff offered as current religious dogma, but simply finding out that Washington, Jefferson, Franklin and a lot of other highly regarded historical figures were considered Deists does not really satisfy my need to understand if I an ready to call myself a Deist, or not. Guess I'll just have to delve further into the concept.

Not a great showing for deism

Good intentions but it gets needlessly argumentative. Instead of a coherent philosophical, social, economic, or practical argument in favor of deism, it degenerates into a tit-for-tat name calling against other religions.
