The story has been told many times but never seems to get old. Wallis Simpson, a twice-divorced American, took up with King Edward VIII of England, and, in 1936, he abdicated to marry her, which he couldn’t have done had he remained on the throne. Forever afterward, they drifted aimlessly as the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. The central question has been, as Sebba poses it, “How could a middle-aged, not especially beautiful, rather masculine-looking woman have exerted such a powerful effect on a king that he gave up his throne in order to possess her?” Wallis met and mesmerized the future king when he was still Prince of Wales, and “it was her assurance, poise and buoyancy that the Prince admired, as he could not see the underlying insecurity.” The author makes it clear that Wallis never intended to become the queen, but once she embarked on her affair, she found it impossible to back out, and when the prince suddenly became king, marriage was not what she had planned. Excellent! Well researched and easy to read

Excellent! Well researched and easy to read. Wallis is neither demonized nor made into a saint here. Anne Sebba created a perfect biography or the infamous woman who very poignantly said to all in awe of her feminine charms: "You have no idea how hard it is to live out the greatest Love Story of the century."

"that woman" draws a rich portrait of the Prince thru the observations of functional adults in his world. His self- indulgent attitude repelled; while drawing hedonistic people like a magnet. His famous abdication is a common tale writ for a large stage.

Interesting depiction of Wally

"That Woman" by Anne Sebba is a very interesting presentation of the life of Wallis Warfield Spencer Simpson, Duchess of Windsor. I don't suppose anyone will ever really know what on earth happened to convince King Edward VIII to abdicate his throne to marry a twice-divorced woman, whose two ex-husbands were still living, but Sebba offers some hitherto unpublished, although often speculated about, explanations of the somewhat questionable sexuality of the the two protagonists. There is almost no doubt Wallis Simpson climbed above her head, socially, politically, and certainly financially. She was obviously unaware of the very real, deep-seated, and firmly grounded objections to her marriage to the King. He surely would have known of the political and social mores of the time. I have often suspected that he simply chose to ignore them and was almost gasping for breath as he used the love affair as a way out. It was fun being a globe-tortting prince and basking in the world's adoration, but it was another thing to accept an overwhelming responsiblity. Sebba presents the Windsors as people ostensibly the in center of their world but really exisitng on the edges. It is an interpretation well worth reading.
