Polymer Chemistry 2nd ed by Hiemenz and Lodge

This 2nd edition is nearly a total rewrite. The fine structure of the first edition is greatly strengthened by the most recent advances in polymer science and crystal clear explanations of the important phenomena, especially in polymer physics. Worked exercises and challenging homework problems aid student learning. I have used all the major texts to teach introductory polymer science to seniors and also graduate students in chemical engineering, materials science, chemistry and biomedical engineering. I was required to get this book for a college polymer class. Its not bad, but it does lack in examples. It never fully explains how to do many types of problems, which makes studying for exams much harder. If your prof fills in the blanks, its okay, or if you just want to understand some general principles, its great. It just lacks on the particular details of solving more complex problems.

I'm about halfway through the text so far, and I have to say I'm really enjoying it. The progression of material is pretty standard for beginning language texts, with dialogues followed by a vocabulary list, grammatical explanation, and finally exercises. Often, authors of self-help language texts will shy away from using correct grammatical terminology, but I appreciate that Kahn hasn't gone that route. The explanations are correct and precise. I highly recommend getting the package of audio CD and paperback, as the recordings are a great help in learning the the correct pronunciation and accent, especially if you have a more limited access to native Yiddish speakers.

A couple things I like about the material in Colloquial Yiddish is that it is both relevent for modern everyday life (vocabulary like email, cellphone, etc.), but also true to the fact that most speakers today are Orthodox Jews. There's no ridiculously contrived dialogue in a situation that clearly could not exist in the current Yiddish-speaking world. There's no day at the beach in a bikini in this one. It does, however, give insight into the rich cultural heritage of a secular Yiddish world that's all but faded away.

The author is up front from the beginning that the Yiddish here is clearly the YIVO standard. She is well aware that her audience is not comprised of Desperate Houswives of Kiryas Joel, but rather students, academics, or random secular learners. There might be some vocalbulary that varies between dialects and communities, but this is a great place to start.

I really just wanted to learn transliterated Yiddish. But this book only uses transliteration through the first third of its chapters. I was really intimidated by having to learn a whole new alphabet to learn to recognize words on my favorite Yiddish and Klezmer Cds. But after a week of regular reading in the book, Im reading Yiddish right to left in the Hebraic Alphabet. The cd's are helpful and have multiple people speaking on them so it helps get a sense of different accents, but i certainly dont use them as much as the book. I spend a little time on the BART almost everyday reading some of the book and I already feel so klug.

About the Author
Paul J. Feldstein is Professor and Robert Gumbiner Chair in Health Care Management at the Paul Merage School of Business, University of California, Irvine, a position he has held since 1987. He previously served at the University of Michigan as Professor in both the Department of Economics and the School of Public Health. Before that, he was Director of the Division of Research at the American Hospital Association. Professor Feldstein has written more 70 articles on health care as well as seven books, including Health Policy Issues: An Economic Perspective on Health Reform, 5e (2011) and The Politics of Health Legislation: An Economic Perspective, 3e (2006). During several leaves from the University, Professor Feldstein worked at the Office of Management and Budget, Social Security Administration, and the World Health Organization. He has served as a consultant to many government and private health agencies, an expert witness on health anti-trust issues--including the case of the FTC v. The AMA, which was decided by the U.S. Supreme Court--and as a member of the boards of directors of several health care firms. Professor Feldstein received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.

Review of Health Care Economics

I found the book to be very good. Throughout it emphasizes an economic approach to what is occurring in health care and, what I particularly like, is the author's use of economic figures to illustrate the economic theory. The book covers a lot of health care topics and it's well written. I recommend it. The other students in the class also liked the book.

Left liberal screed on health care politics, not instruction on health care economics

I bought this book to learn about the financial and economic sides of the health care industry. What I've gotten instead is a leftist screed advocating redistribution, totally critical of physicians, dentists, hospitals, and health care organizations, and devoid of any appreciation for market economics. Here is a quote:

"Government policy should be concerned with achieving two objectives: improving market efficiency and, based on society's values, the redistribution of resources or services." p.10.

Is "redistribution" really what government should be doing? What about promoting medical research, increasing the number of providers, improving health habits of the population, and allowing private insurers to compete on price and products without smothering government restrictions?

Each time I try to ignore his politics and read on in Feldstein's book to learn something about health care economics I run into crtiques of the AMA, the American Hospital Association, nurses' unions, medical schools, and pharmaceutical companies.

So if you want a left liberal critique of modern American medicine with no objective balance, buy this book. But if you want to learn about health care economics or get at least a fair picture of health care politics, don't waste your time.

Wonderful

I have been using the first edition Clemente's atlas that I purchased in medical school in 1976. The larger illustrations and the addition of radiological images have greatly improved the clarity and ease of understanding that was the reason I kept Clemente on my desk for 36 years. It is now even better.

Beautiful illustrations, very detailed, might be too in dept for lower collage anatomy courses.

Book was actually wrote by one of our old faculty here on campus at UCLA. Great book, beautiful illustrations. The labelings are very clear and indept. Not sure if this is because our lectures were based off of Dr. Clemente's old ppt or not, but everything we've taught can be found in this book!

We use this book for our graduate program here at school. As a result, it might be a bit too indept for college level courses.

About the Author
Craig Dirgo is the best-selling author of The Einstein Papers, The Tesla Documents, and Gunnison Grit. He also co-authored several books with the masterful Clive Cussler including The Sea Hunters I and II, Golden Buddha and Sacred Stone - all New York Times best sellers. One of six children of an Air Force Colonel, Dirgo grew up on air bases in the United States and England before finally settling in Colorado. A part-time job washing and waxing classic cars led to meeting Clive Cussler, acclaimed author and founder of NUMA National Underwater and Marine Agency, a non-profit historical research foundation. When an opportunity arose to co-author a book about NUMA, Cussler asked Dirgo to take on the task. The result was the New York Times best seller, The Sea Hunters. This was followed by Clive Cussler and Dirk Pitt Revealed and The Sea Hunters II. While working with Cussler, Dirgo also began writing on his own and soon thereafter published his first John Taft adventure, The Einstein Papers. Please proofread context and grammar.

The book book was historically quite interesting, at least to me, since I was not too interested in knowing everything I was taught in physical science! My only problem with this book was in the use of correct grammar and syntax! I don't know how translation of original print to e-book format is done, but it needs to be proofed before released. This book was a bit better than the Einstein Papers but not by much. My advice, hire a proof reader before sending material to the great ether in the sky to be downloaded to Kindle! Thank you for allowing me to comment.

"O my America, my new-found-land!" Mateo Renaldo Colombo (or Columbus, to give him his English name) might have written in his De re anatomica."

It is no accident that Federico Andahazi draws a parallel between his Renaissance hero, the anatomist Mateo Colombo, and the explorer Christopher Columbus. It is the conceit of his first novel, The Anatomist (beautifully translated from the Spanish by Alberto Manguel), that both Colombos made "equally momentous and disturbing" discoveries. Every schoolchild can tell you what Columbus's was; less well known, perhaps, is that of his countryman and fellow "explorer." "Mateo's America is less distant and infinitely smaller than Christopher's; in fact, it's not much larger than the head of a nail." In short, Mateo Renaldo Colombo discovered the Amor Veneris, the clitoris.

Andahazi makes much of this discovery, not to mention its discoverer: "The discovery of Mateo Colombo's America was, all things considered, an epic counterpointed by an elegy. Mateo Colombo was as fierce and heartless as Christopher. Like Christopher (to use an appropriate metaphor) he was a brutal colonizer who claimed for himself all rights to the discovered land, the female body." Certainly women readers will view this description with at least as much irony as Native Americans regard that other Columbus's "discovery" of a land they had known about all along.

The Anatomist is based on a historical figure and historical fact; what Andahazi provides is his title character's heart and soul. The fictional Colombo is driven by desire for the high-priced courtesan Mona Sofia. Though Mateo adores her, the heartless Sofia regards him as nothing more than a paying customer. After breaking both his heart and his bank account over her, Colombo returns to his native Padua whence he is eventually called to Florence to treat a saintly young widow, In�s de Torremolinos. In�s is "infinitely beautiful," and her illness is "far from common." While examining her, he discovers "between his patient's legs a perfectly formed, erect and diminutive penis." Land ho.

Though Colombo's "discovery," first in In�s and then in other women, offers plenty of opportunity for eroticism, the most compelling aspect of The Anatomist lies in the Church's reaction to De re anatomica, the book Colombo writes detailing his find. The Renaissance may well have signaled the birth of new art, science, and philosophy, but it was also the age of Inquisition--and Colombo's unfolding of "the key to the heart of all women ... the anatomical cause of love" soon lands him in prison on charges of heresy and Satanism. The trial, Mateo's defense, and the surprising aftermath make for provocative reading and raise The Anatomist above the level of the merely erotic to a more intriguing philosophical plane, one that is sure to prompt a lively discussion or two. --Alix Wilber

Argentinian short story writer Andahazi brings his flair for satire to his first novel, an arch improvisation on the life of an actual Italian Renaissance physician. Andahazi's Mateo Colombo, or Columbus, is, like his namesake, an explorer, but his discovery is on a very human scale. To be precise, his America is the Amor Veneris, the "organ that governs the love of women." Yes, this intrepid anatomist happens upon the clitoris and cannot believe his good fortune. He conducts in-depth research with a number of willing prostitutes until rumors begin to fly, and his enemies at the university report him to the authorities. Placed under house arrest in anticipation of his trial for heresy, blasphemy, witchcraft, and satanism, he pines for his true love, the most beautiful and scornful whore in all of Italy. Meanwhile, the woman who led him to the promised spot, a pious and philanthropic young widow living in Florence, is praying for his return. Andahazi flirts with the conventions of tragedy, but parody rules, especially when Colombo mollifies his accusers over the course of his pseudoscholarly self-defense by assuring them that women have no soul. Stylistically on a par with Umberto Eco, albeit in a burlesque mode, Andahazi succeeds in exposing the hypocrisy of those inquisitional times, and his novel is definitely a cut above most on the best-seller lists, where it landed after arousing great controversy in Argentina, but it nonetheless rings hollow, eliciting laughter more queasy than jolly. Neither Fish nor Fowl

I much enjoyed the book and read it at one sitting. As others have noted, the author is clearly familiar with the subject, and has done plenty of research, and has peppered the text with enough Italian phrases to make you almost feel at home in the plot. Written in a style that aspires to be literary, philosophical, as well as befitting the period, the novel fails to move the reader and feel for the characters who are as flat as a board. Five for research and style and one for writing a compelling as well as historically founded plot. There you go, a plain three stars!

worthy but short of excellent

Personal Review of 'The Anatomist' ______________________ Robert Wolf, Charlottesville, VA USA
After learning of the impending release of this book on N.P.R. news, I was quite intrigued and amused by the premise. I also was attracted by the fact that the story scandalized the fragile sensibilities of a present day nation at the dawn of the 21st century. (Any issues focusing too overtly on the body still can, it seems)
I enjoyed this book in one evening, though it struck me as more a fleshed out short story than a, well, full bodied historical novel. I was moderately connected to the characters, but only "by half" as the British like to say. Of course, there were no truly sympathetic characters in the story after one get's to know the basics of their persona. (The crow was perhaps the most genuine and lovable character I thought, second only to Lorena Bobbit's young patron saint.) Maybe I missed knowing more of these character's deeper motivations and enough background to appreciate them better.
The portrayal of combined ignorance of the processes of the physical world was fairly shocking when mixed with the the self indulgent suppositions that passed for placing new shreds of evidence into some comfortable perspective. It drives home Anais' eternal observation that "we don't see the world as it is, we see it as WE are."
I think the dry misogynist courtroom scenes were effective farce which reflected well into corrosive gender attitudes that persist to the present day. They did make me start to root for the executioner, however.
I found it slightly unbelievable that NOBODY on any corner of the planet had noticed the nerve bundle at the center of this story prior to the 16th European century, weather by exploration of their own territorial waters or of other's distant shores... Perhaps the neglected issue was more due to a lack a means of dissemination than an actual oversight by the entire the human species to date. So much for the 'oral tradition'.
Perhaps the only real winner's in this story were the opportunistic venereal microbes who seemed to cruise through their happy lives undisturbed by the vicious, threatened institutions of the era or even the flaccid efforts of 16th century 'medicine'. Not all that much HAS changed after all.

Masterly done, tempting beyond its cover

Somewhere halfway through, I could not help thinking that this was nothing but one more glorifying repackaging of Rennaisance alchemic sophistry; more fodder against the monopoly on knowledge of the Catholic Church and the effective extermination by auto-da-fe of minds that dared even a slight deviation from its preachings.
To understand in what ways this is much more than that, one needs to read it to the last page. The most intriguing aspect of it, is the triangle formed by Matteo Colombo, the anatomist, Ines de Torremolinos, the pious Florentine widow and Mona Sofia, the classy Venetian prostitute--and what became of each at the end.
Boludo is an Argentine word literally meaning "chutzpah" but also describes an "idiot" in liberal interpretation. Well, this is a boludo book in a literal sense...

Dense, but with an informative theoretical basis.

This textbook was prescribed by my university (University of Cape Town) as part of an undergraduate Public Policy and Administration course. I find Hill's prose dense and lengthy, and his manner of writing has many conditional clauses, making the details hard to follow. He does have a knowledgeable take on the subject however, and the overall message is informative. His perspective is British, and he uses theoretical analyses appropriately to frame the examples he gives. This book is best read linearly, as reference to earlier concepts are often made.

This is a moderate-quality book, the photograph/printing is medium-resolution, and the book is short.
$30-50 would be appropriate price for this book.
If you are looking for a definitive atlas, look elsewhere but I do expect this will be useful to most primary care providers.
