In generating nuclear radiation and using them for beneficial purposes, scientists and engineers must understand the properties of the radiation and how they interact with their surroundings. It is through the control of radiation interactions that we can develop new devices or optimize existing ones to make them more safe, powerful, durable, or economical. This is why radiation interaction is the essence of this book.

Radiation for designing The Generator

This is my favorite book in my small library on physics. I have read about nuclear physics in other books, but this takes the prize. Instead of flooding the student with an immense load, the focus on radiation provides a vehicle that the student can ride with pleasure. Some surprising pieces of knowledge were read in Nuc. Rad. Interactions by Yip. The Coulomb force in a nucleus can attract at close range within some constraints from page 94. Thank you Sidney Yip for a book that will enlighten those diligent seekers of experimentally derived models.

A second chance....

I thought this story could have been more, but it was nevertheless enjoyable. It had all the right ingredients for a good story. A second chance for the couple and the heroine in love with her best friend’s brother and dual povs.

Six years ago: Heroine has always been in love with her brother’s best friend. The hero was several years older and has been in love with the heroine since she was 11. Neither has ever acted on his/her feelings. The hero was waiting for the right time to tell her about his feelings. He wanted to tell her after her senior prom. She went to her senior prom with her best friend whom is a guy. The hero waited that night for her return. As the night got later and later, he got drunker and drunker and madder and madder. The h’s sister finds him in his drunken state and seduces him. The h finds them in bed together.

Present: The H is back and out of the military. The h is now a single mom raising the H’s daughter. Her sister went into labor after an accident and gave birth to a girl. She asked the h to raise her daughter right before she died. The H does not know about the daughter. The h’s brother knows that the h could use some income so he suggests that the H rents out her extra bedroom. The story starts here with some flashbacks from six years ago. The H is still in love with the h and tries to win her back. The h is weary and afraid to trust him again.

Missing: The two never talked about prom night or her sister’s role in ruining their relationship. Granted, the two were not dating or a couple, but I felt that the H got off easy when the h said she did not want to revisit that night. This was also after the H blew up and yelled at the h about her sleeping with her date on prom night when believed that the daughter was just hers. I don’t think he says sorry at all about that night throughout the story. I felt like there was some closure missing. I wanted them to just talk about it. I like that the hero tries to win the heroine back, but I thought she could have made him work harder to earn it.

I really like the dual povs. I especially like the H's thoughts of the past and present regarding his feelings for the h.

A recommend. I would read more of the author's works in the future.

Couldn't get through the book, gave up 2/3 through

Creeped me out that the male lead had sex and a child with the main character's sister while he was in love with the main character. Of course the sister had to die. She couldn't be alive and have his child while he is in love with the other sister. Sorry, once he slept with my sister, he is off limits. Ick!

Couldn't Put It Down!

For me, what sets apart a good book is how quickly I read it. I made it through this one in just a few days (with four kids to take care of)...I couldn't put it down! The author develops the characters well and isn't over the top with suspense. She keeps you guessing, but doesn't waste any time with side stories. AND, there are nice little steamy interludes mixed in between. The main character, Evelyn, is very relatable - a single mom who worked her way through school and is now an independent young woman trying to make a home for her daughter, McKinley. Her story about having loved and lost, only to learn how to love again, is an ideal that everyone is familiar with. This is her story - taking one last leap of faith for love. But is it worth the risk? This book is a must read!

"An Interesting, Almost Scholarly Writing"

A scholarly treatise with an overtly easy read for enhanced understandability and readability to the non-scientific layperson, this book is perhaps an important one in understanding the more complex issues raised by the specter of epidemic and pandemic `plagues' which have wrought havoc on the Earth's populations and entire nations, cultures and religions since first recorded case in 430 BC. This book concentrates largely on the "Black Plague" which struck between 1328 and 1352, mainly years 1347 to 1349, but deals also with lesser plagues and some closely related pestilences whose etiology remains obscure but subject to knowledgeable discourse, and includes Ebola, small pox (Red Plague), dysenteries, typhus, anthrax, influenzas, and a variety of named Plagues (Great, Grey, Red, bubonic etc.).

This study was necessarily based on written historical records, many originally chronicled in archives of churches, etc. and written by survivors of the disease. The response of the Church to the origin, impact and dealings with the sick is detailed.

Etiology of "Black Death" was eventually ascribed to humans infected with bacterium Yesinia pestis after bitten and thus inoculated by the rat flea Xenopsylla cheopsis. There followed an almost immediate course of sepsis with swollen lymphatic nodes or buboes that suppurate, pneumonias, septic syndrome and death usually within 1-3 days. Mortality rates vary from 60-95%, populations often decimated 25-30%. The epidemiology of the disease is nicely discussed by the author who traces the initial cases from the Mediterranean to world-wide dissemination via trade routes, cargo ships, caravans, etc. via rats, fleas and human contacts.

Well written but not much substance

I read this short little book in a few hours. The author writes very well and his light style makes the subject enjoyable. Unfortunately, with the exception of some interesting material on the 'Flagellants', most of the information he provides has been dealt with in depth in quite a number of other books on the subject, such as the excellent Black Death by Phillip Zeigler. Also, had the author simply written a book about historical pandemics and left it at that, the book might have impressed me a little more. However, he chose to write a book about the Plague using the title 'The Black Death' and therein lies what I see as one of the flaws of the book. At the very beginning, Mr Martin unequivocally declared that the pathogen responsible for the first, second and third pandemics was 'Yersinia Pestis' and maintains this a the central thesis of the book. Today, however, there is a growing belief that the disease that ravaged Europe in the middle ages (and now referred to as the 'Black Death') is not the same disease whose cause was isolated as the Bubonic Plague organism during an outbreak in China in the 19th Century. Only in the final chapter does the author even acknowledge the the existence of any controversy and then he fails to deal with it in any meaningful way. I don't believe that any decent book on this interesting subject can afford to so cavalier with the issue today.

The Basic Desire

All beings are united by the most basic of desires: making copies of itself. For Pollan, the next logical step was to seriously consider the plants point of view. More specifically: the apple, the tulip, cannabis, and the potato. While we consider them domesticized, that gives the impression that were in charge. Unequivocally, they are in turn manipulating us, each party ensuring the survival of the other species. Further, by looking at the social history of each of these plants, we find highly accurate clues about the history of mankind. We shape them, and they shape us. In tracing our relation to the development of each plant, we unlock a multitude of implications about who we are.
