About the Author
Eca de Queiroz was born in 1845 in Portugal. He studied law, was editor of a provincial newspaper, and had a diplomatic career.He was appointed Portuguese consul to Havana, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Bristol, and Paris, where he served until his death in 1900. He is considered Portugal's greatest nineteenth-century writer. This, his second novel, was published in 1878 to great acclaim.

Superb novel - Magnificent translation

I ordered this by chance, to read during a holiday in Lisbon. What a revelation! This is a great late XIX Century novel about bourgeois adultery. It belongs on the same shelf as Madame Bovary and Anna Karenina, but it is even closer to Emile Zola's "La Curee." Luiza, a lovely young wife, is led into temptation by her worldly cousin Bazilio, an awful rake. Consequently, Luiza is blackmailed by her ghastly maid Juliana. The struggle between the two women goes ever deeper. I won't betray any more of the plot, except to say that there are many wonderful secondary characters, several hilarious moments (although the whole novel is built toward a tragic ending), and a lot of political subtext. Reading it in Lisbon was a extra-special treat, as I carried the book through the very streets where it takes place.
Once I was done with it, I picked up another Queiroz at the Lisbon FNAC for the flight back, translated in French this time. Wow! What a letdown: all choppy and strangely overdone. That proved to me - a contrario - that Margaret Jull Costa did a fantastic job translating Cousin Bazilio. I never was conscious I was reading a translation. I will read more novels by Queiroz, but only if translated by Margaret Jull Costa.

Great Information

Yes, there are plenty of sample projects for you to do in this book, but I think the best part of it was how in each project, there were explanations on what to do to get a desired result. For example, if you were to design a logo, it would explain what to look for in the competition, how to beat them, and how to interpret the information you've gathered to complete a design. It was a good refresher for sure.

This book was purchased for a graphic design course I was taking. Usually at the end of each semester I would sell back my books however this book I kept as it is very useful and informative. It has soo many great exercises that help keep everything I learned fresh in mind. Very useful and would recommend it to anyone.

About the Author
Jerry Whitaker is Technical Director of the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC), in Washington, DC. He was previously President of Technical Press, a consulting company based in the San Jose (CA) area. Mr. Whitaker has been involved in various aspects of the electronics industry for over 25 years, with specialization in communications.

Mr. Whitaker has lectured extensively on the topic of electronic systems design, installation, and maintenance. He is the former editorial director and associte publisher of BROADCAST ENGINEERING and VIDEO SYSTEMS magazines, and a former radio station chief engineer and television news producer.

Mr. Whitaker is a Fellow of the Society of Broadcast Engineers and an SBE-certified professional broadcast engineer. He is also a fellow of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, and a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

He has twice received a Jesse H. Neal Award Certificate of Merit from the Association of Business Publishers for editorial excellence, and been recognized as Educator of the Year by the Society of Broadcast Engineers.

Mr. Whitaker resides in Morgan Hill, California.

I'm reading this book right now, but haven't finished it, but was so pleased with the volume that I wanted to make a few comments. I might have more to say when I complete it.

I bought this book after starting to bone up on digital TV, and realized that I could use a good, comprehensive review on analog TV, on which I'd become rusty. I'm not a professional in the field but an interested amateur, and was looking for a good book on the subject. In fact, it's primarily about digital TV, but there are excellent reviews of analog TV principles, including chapters on wave propagation; frequency sources; basic analog receiver principles and design, with discussions of the most important components, such as modulators and demodulators, amplifier principles; analog to digital conversion; phase locked loops and synchronization issues in general, analog and digital filters, consumer video and networking, cable television, satellite TV, and other topics.

So this book fit the bill. The book covers dozens of topics, from more descriptive to fairly techical, although there isn't too much math. But you still need to remember enough about the most important circuits and devices in the communications field to benefit from it. For example, there is a detailed discussion of why a simple diode-based envelope modulation detector, which is basically employed as a half-wave rectifier, doesn't work very well due to the diode's poor response characteristics, including higher noise, a tendency toward overmodulation distortion, and low power output and amplification, and why a transistor-based one with the collector biased to near saturation is better, providing a 15 to 20 db improvement. And then they explain why synchronous detectors, consisting of a phase-locked loop and multiplier circuits, are even better. The articles often discuss the problem with the basic approaches, as in the above case, and how to resolve them with better and more advanced designs.

Many of the chapters are still pretty technical despite the lack of math, so don't let that fool you. In other words, your background should be at least as good as Schrader's classic, introductory volume on Electronic Communication before reading this, which is a book used in junior college technical courses in electronics.

One chapter I found especially good, although quite dense with information, was the chapter on television reception of signals. It's the best 50-page review of the subject I've seen, and is written by a team of half a dozen authors. The articles are often written by more than one expert in the field.

Subjects covered include analog and digital TV, cable TV, broadcast TV, and satellite TV. The satellite chapter is a little short, but then that would require a whole volume by itself, such as Roddy's volume on the subject, Satellite Communications, which I can also highly recommend.

The book is now seven years old, but keep in mind this is more of an intermediate book covering many of the fundamentals as well as a lot of the more advanced material. Much of it is far beyond the basics, however, although perhaps not at the highest level with all the complex engineering math. My advanced math probably isn't at that level anymore, either, but if you can read and understand this, you'll probably know far more than anyone except an experienced broadcast engineering professional.

This is an impressive volume and despite the price, was money well spent for me given all the quality information, especially considering how difficult it is to condense such a broad field into one book. But this volume does an excellent job of that.

Your Schools Physics Dept. Sucks if They Require This Book

I am sure if you are buying this textbook it is because it's required. Just be warned, it is awful. Horribly written, terrible examples, exercises that barely pertain to the preceding sections. Do yourself a favor, and look for an early cheap edition of Giancoli Physics to go along with your purchase and read from it (trust me...you will thank me). Also, first semester physics students....chegg (no joke....chegg).

Someday- (I like to also call it Oneday...)

We all want our kids to dream, and dream big. But never have I read such a glistening example of a how a child's dreams co-exist with her (and with our adult) realities, until I picked up Eileen Spinelli's Someday.

With lyrical lines such as, "Someday I will make friends with a dolphin. I will call her Wilma. I will ask Wilma to tell me all the secrets of the sea, and she will. Someday...", followed on the opposite page with, "Right now I am flaking fish food flakes into the bowl where my pet goldfish pumpkin lives. He blows tiny bubbles but doesn't talk to me. Maybe goldfish don't have secrets to tell..." the author creates a timeless expose of the wonder years.

Thirty-two pages of beautifully illustrated (Rosie Winstead) lines remind us parents that kids really do have the power to be everyone, and everything. It reminds us that the possibilities truly are endless. Which is a delightful thing to be reminded of.

A charming and delightful book, Someday encourages children to imagine a world beyond their own and assures them that although their every day life may seem boring now, the future is for them to create. This is one book I never tire of reading to my daughter, and it will be on our gift list for every girl we know.

Someday is Brilliant!!

Eileen Spinelli's picturebook Someday is brilliant. Strong female characters are always easy to gravitate to - and Spinelli's hero in this picturebook story is one to remember and has universal appeal. (In fact, she is reminiscent of Jerry Spinelli's Stargirl. I guess it all makes sense being that Jerry Spinelli based his Stargirl character on his wife and best friend Eileen! As an upper elementary school to high school teacher, imagine having your students investigate this wonderful picturebook as a possible prequel to Stargirl!!)

The text starts out: "Someday I am going to be an artist. I will wear a blue smock. I will carry my pants to the beach..." The affirming and confident text represents the main character's strong voice. This voice and all the little girl expects to be one day is also reminiscent of the international best-seller The Secret. (The Secret's notion of thinking and imagining confidently.) This little girl does just that!

Sweet submission indeed!

Wow just wow. Sweet submission was super hot. If you thought part 1 was steamy well get ready because this gets super steamy and I loved every bit of it. Neve is marked by Tucker which means he has claimed her as his mate but he tries to explain that she belongs to the rest of the pack just as much. The mark makes her in tune with them and also makes her feel desires that are almost unbearable. Everything begins to feel like it's a bit much for her to process and so she is left with a choice to make. Go on with her future or stay. Tucker and the rest of the guys prove their loyalty and the fact that she is one of them by protecting her when she needs them and it is then that her decision becomes clear. They belong to her just as much as she belongs to them and oh boy does she find out in more ways than one! Yes this story is very hot but it's so much more to it that keeps me interested. The plot and character development is great. You really feel like you know these character's so well that you feel yourself getting attached. Mal, Jake, Barrett and Reed are the perfect group of guys for this pack and I can't wait to get more of them. Tucker and Neve's chemistry is still off the charts here and even though she is part of them now he always makes it clear who she really belongs to. He always makes it known who is the alpha! Things end in this second part with them realizing that the rival pack leader, Asher will go to great lengths to make it known he still wants his revenge. So really it's just beginning. I am forever ruined for any other shifter romance I read after this. I just know I'm always going to compare them to this one. Yes it already made me feel that way after just reading the second part. So if you read the first do not stop there. This series is definitely worth it.

It's just getting heated up and no sign of cooling down, this story is well-worth the price of admission!

This story just gets hotter and hotter, quite literally…by the end of installment 2, the place is literally ON FIRE! But be warned, this installment is a cliffhanger but what a story it has been so far. Kimber has a wonderful talent to draw the reader into her world of werewolves and embracing us in the story of her well-constructed, well-developed characters. This story (parts 1 & 2) has swept me up into a fast-paced, sexy, tall, dark and handsome werewolf meets na�ve but hardened by life, strong, beautiful human female world of death, hardship, anger, revenge, sex, love, brotherhood, companionship, friendship and pack bonds that will be hard to shake after the whole story has been told. I already know, with 3 more installments to go that I will have a hard time putting Neve, Tucker and the whole gang back on the shelf when it is all over.
Neve and Tucker are H.O.T. from the beginning and it doesn’t stop with Tucker, the pack (Jake, Mal, Reed and Barrett) are starting to stake a claim on her as well. Tucker gives Neve one final chance to pull away from him and the pack and go back to her life plan of being a student at U of M and leading a normal life of studying music and maybe having a life on the stage someday. Everyone tells her that is what she should do and it would be a waste of her talent if she doesn’t but Neve is left with the question, is she wanting that life because that is what her father, friends, teachers and others want or is that what she truly wants for her life? In the end Tucker and the pack…well, I’ll leave you to find out in this amazing continuation of this sizzling series.
Neve, in this installment, also comes face to face with the enemy, Asher and his pack. And just as Tucker had promised her, the pack, her pack came to her rescue. She learns more about not only belonging to Tucker and he to her but how she belongs to the pack and they to her. She learns what it is like to belong to two wolves at a time but still belong and mated only to Tucker, it is one hot night in the cabin!
But after all the excitement of the invasion by Asher and his pack and Tucker and Mal (Tucker’s beta or second in command) going after them to chase them out of their territory, Tucker returns to refresh himself and his love with Neve. Mal is another question all together, Neve feels disconnected from him but yet he is connected to her through Tucker and the pack. He is constantly snarling at her and rude to her but at the same time he saved her life when Asher and his pack attacked. There is definitely something there but Neve just doesn’t know what.
This installment ends when things really heat up and I’m not talking about in the bedroom although that definitely happens too. A fire rips through the cabin that the entire pack is staying in and Tucker carrying Neve escape the flames that are consuming the cabin and the forest that surround it but the rest of the pack is gone…what happened to them? Did they survive? Are they lost to the flames? What will become of the pack? Where do they go from here?
CanNOT wait to read installment 3 to find out and continue down this wonderful path that Kimber has built for us. By the way, I received a complimentary copy of this story in exchange for an open and honest review.

She's Claimed by the Pack - but does she want to be?

What an interesting series this is turning out to be! Everything heats up, literally, in this second story. Nev has been marked by Tucker as his mate, but she still has time to decide this isn't what she wants and can go back to her life she had planned. But she doesn't have long to make up her mind - soon the bond from his mark will be too strong to break. Nev learns more and more that she does not just belong to Tucker, (and he to her), but also belongs to the whole pack (and they to her) as they all become more aware of each other's whereabouts, feelings, and needs. (and they have some frickin' hot needs...) In this segment we learn more about each of the four other men in the pack, and also about the dispute between them and the rival pack. Warning: This one ends on a cliffhanger, so be ready to be craving Part 3!
I must say I read a few shifter books before this, and they were okay but nothing I got really excited about. I probably wouldn't have gotten this series if I did not receive it as an ARC. But I am really, truly enjoying this continuing story. I find myself caught up in all the interpersonal relationships and the suspense of what's going to happen, about and beyond the shifting part. These are interesting characters and you can't help pulling for them. I am really looking forward to the next segment!

This edition is an excellent review of Terrorim. It provides the history on how terrorism was used in the past and an excellent anology of the current events. I am using the book for undergrad students at the university and highly recommend it.
