Excellent introduction to the topic

This book provides an excellent introduction to the "macro" issues surrounding the shipping trade. Perspective is provided on the growth of volume of trade over time, geographic areas the ship construction business and financing in this field (among many other areas). The book does not, however, prvoide (nor is it intended) a "micro" analysis as to how business is conducted on a day-to-day basis (i.e., bunkering, role of different crew members, role of agents, etc.). For an excellent introduction to this one should instead refer to "The Business of Shipping"

Books weaknesses are:

a) Dated information. This most important weakness by far. Nearly all data/information, most of which the author collected and/or tabulated himself (and in many cases developed himself) is from the early 1990s and the late 1980s. Immense changes resulting from seaborne trading patterns due to China's and emergin nation's economic integration into the global economy are hence not discussed in the book. This is desprite the fact taht these chages are probably the most radical to maritime trade since the end of WWII.

This problem will hopefully be remedied in the new edition of the book which is to be released January 2009.

b) Little discussion regarding the market for crews. This is despite the fact that the author himself expllicitely states this is a critical bottleneck for the industry. A chapter (or at least a few pages instead of a sentence or two) adressing this aspect of the business is needed.

Update:

A new Third Edition of this book has recently been published that updates most of the information contained in the 2nd ed. Althouth about $20 more expensive, this updated information, along with other improvements (i.e., expanded chapters, very detailed cost-breakdown information on a variety of different types of vessels, etc.- for more details see my review of the third edition) make this extra $20 a worth while investment.

One of THE best if not THE best book on Maritime Economics from a Macro perspective

This book provides an excellent macro economic view of the shipping tranportation business. The reason is the author's authoritative knowledge of the field. He has has over 30 years of experience in the field in both the private sector (as an Economist specializing in the field with Chase Manhattan Bank, Chief Executive of Lloyd's Maritme Information Services, Directof of Business Development with British Shipbuilders and an Executive Director of Clarkson's PLC) and academia (as a Professor at Cass Business School, the Cambridge Academy of Transport, Dalian Maritime University and Copenhage Business School).

The book starts out with a historical overview of the shipping industry (lengthier than the 2nd edition of this book) then presents chapters on the organization of the shipping market, shipping market cycles, shipping markets by different categories of vessel (and the cargoes they handle), financial flows, industry financing and insurance, risk, geographic markets, the markets for ships (both new and second hand) as well as for vessels for scrapping, and legal and regulatory structures. All of these are covered very well and provide an excellent overview through 2007 (i.e., just before the shipping bust of 2008). It should be stressed that the book is intended to provide a macro view of the industry as opposed to a micro view (i.e., discussing how vessels are run on a day to day basis). For a good overview of how ships are run on a day to day basis Kendall's "The Business of Shipping" is highly recommended. That book gives an excellent overview of bunkering, how cargoes are handled, manifests, etc. Hence it is an excellent supplement to Stopford's Maritime Economics. Last but not least, Maritime Economics presents many facts that are very difficult to research and find data on as data sources in the shipping industry, unlike most industries, is not that readily available. This is due to the fact that the industry is characterized by privately held companies. Examples of such research includes tables showing breakdowns of vessel costs by labor, fuel, capital costs, etc., depreciation tables, etc. Much of this data is for particular classes of vessel (i.e., panamax cargo vessels, cape tankers, etc.). This information is very difficult to find elsewhere without an large expenditure of money for purchase.

The 2nd Ed. of Maritime Economics (as of October 2009) is still in print and is being sold at about $20 less than this edition. Despite the price differential the 3rd edition is still worth the money. This is so for a number of reasons. One (and the most important) is the fact that it contains data through 2007 (as opposed to the last that only goes through the mid-1990s). In addition, the chapters are expanded over the previous editions and many of the factual tables referred to above (i.e., on cost breakdowns and depreciation schedules) are not available in the previous edition. The extra $20 is well worth any of these. The only weakness of the book is that it is particularly weak with respect to the labour market in this industry.

All and all this book is an excellent introduction to the industry as well as a veritable treasure chest of information, even for those with considerable knowledge in the industry. As a result it is highly recommended for both the student and those with some knowledge of the industry (though, obviously, the former would find it much more beneficial).

Age of Apocalypse

The complete Age of Apocalypse book 3 collects the real meat of the story. Magneto and his X-Men have all gone their separate ways and now we begin to see each of their individual stories, Nightcrawler's journey to the savage land, Gambit's to the Shi'ar galaxy, Rogue and the Astonishing X-Men head to stop the cullings, ect.

We start to get some of the background of some of the new characters in this volume, such as Sunfire's past. We also get to see where the rest of Marvel's heroes have been in X-Universe.

Age of Apocalypse was one of Marvel's most successful story arcs and in this volume we can see why. It includes some of marvel's top artist today, Adam Kubert (Ultimate X-Men), Chris Bachalo (X-Men), Joe Madureira (Ultimates 3), and Salvador Larroca (The New Universe) as well as some of the top writers Warren Ellis (Ultimate Galactus), Jeph Loeb (Ultimates 3,4), and Fabian Nicieza (Cable and Deadpool). Compelling story picks up right where volume 2 left off

If you enjoyed Vol. 2 of this series, you'll enjoy this one just as much. It continues the stories started in the previous volume and continues bringing them toward their conclusion in Vol. 4. I didn't care much for the X-Man stories, and the Weapon X story seems like something that might have just as easily taken place in the mainstream universe with a few small tweaks, but it was still a good read if you are a fan of the character.

You'll also get the first glimpse of the AoA versions other Marvel heroes and villains in this one, including the Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Hulk, Iron Man and others.

A great teacher!

This is a great book and very well written. Although the title is a little misleading, it does deliver on its promise.

By the time you complete the 24 one-hour lessons you will be creating great websites. I have purchased several web programs and books in the past but still always felt intimidated by the process of creating a website. When things worked, I gave a sigh of relief and chalked it up to luck. When they didn't work, I spent days or weeks trying to fix the problem and pulling my hair out (no easy task when you don't have much to start with). Thanks to Expression Web 4 and this wonderful book and his videos (purchased separately) I feel confident in what I am doing for the first time.

Expression Web 4 is my primary web development tool. Since upgrading to Windows 10 the tool that I was using was no longer compatible with the OS. This book has quickly fill the gaps and solved every issue that I've had, Eespecially the Ftp config. issues that I were showing successful but not updating the web pages on the website.

A good book but could have been better

After going through the first 13 chapters, I was thinking this is really worth a full five stars. Some of these chapters will take a lot longer than an hour, though, if you work through the exercises. And working through the step-by-step exercises in the chapters is the only way to learn the functionality of Expression Web 4. By the way, a good way to work through the exercises is to use the free online edition from Safari - free, that is, if you buy the book. (From the online edition you can print out the steps and follow them in your Expression Web program.)

Chapter 14 is pivotal. It brings much of the material learned in the previous chapters into play as you complete the website project. You can see what the finished project should look like in the book. It's beautiful. But I couldn't bring all the material together even though I tried four different times - many, many hours of total frustration. Perhaps I was doing something wrong but my suspicion is that the mess in this chapter is the author's fault. But if the fault was mine, I hope that some reviewer will tell me. I gave my best effort here and couldn't put it all together.

No one, however, should be dissuaded by my lukewarm three-star review. There is a lot of valuable material in this book. But it's not for a beginner even though Morten Rand-Hendriksen writes in the Introduction: "As a result, this book is written with the novice designer in mind." The novice is likely to get bogged down after the first few chapters and not complete the book.

Very useful for the anesthesia oral exam.

This is a long overdue review of this book considering I have been recommending this book to my residents for years. I believe this textbook can be very useful when preparing for the anesthesia oral exam. The information is presented in a way that is very close to what examiners are looking for; an algorithmic approach with detailed footnotes. Also note this is a fourth edition that is always a good sign for a textbook.

Beautiful Vintage and Renaissance Theme Design Lenormand Deck

I have been waiting to get my own Lenormand deck, but couldn't find one at a decent price and image. I was looking for the Blue Owl deck with verses, but no luck. My friend was looking for one and that prompt me to look again recently. I'm glad this deck came out which reminds me of the Blue Owl deck in terms of the color and versus. I ordered one and one for my friend.The deck is in shrink wrap exterior and interior which made the packaging really tight to open at first. I noticed the lack of image cards for this deck on-line. Therefore, I am attaching an image for viewing purposes. I think this deck is beautiful in terms of the vintage feel and Renaissance theme design which brings an authentic feel to the reading. The instruction book includes Mile Lenormand's mini bio and each card's description in simple terms. The verses on the card are simple and straightforward. I think the deck is great for beginners.

I love absolutely everything about this little deck!

Oh, my goodness. These are the Lenormand cards of my dreams! I have been learning Tarot for awhile, and in my search for Tarot cards and books, stumbled upon the Lenormand and have been learning that as well. I have perused many decks and bought several, but this is my hands-down favorite deck and my search is over.

To me, everything about this deck is perfect. Even the box is delightful, with its sweet blue bird design. The "Little white book" in this case is a "little blue book" with a lovely picture of three blue birds on it, and inside there are even several pictures: a portrait of Mlle. Lenormand, a photograph of her original mausoleum, and a photograph of her current tomb. The explanations, though necessarily brief, are very good.

The cards are like works of art. First, there is the card image itself, mostly in the style of paintings or drawings but incorporating various kinds of artwork including a Victorian valentine heart for the Heart card and a photograph of a woman's hand wearing a ring for the Ring card. The suits are placed in the upper left corner, instead of in the center as in most cards, leaving more room for the central image, and instead of playing-card-type images of the kings, queens, etc., tiny paintings are used.

The cards have verses on them. I know some people dislike this, but to me as a student they are enormously helpful. They certainly don't detract from the cards at all. Do they contain everything needed to interpret a card? Of course not, but they are very helpful when learning, so that one does not have to constantly refer back to the booklet or other book. The verses on these cards are better-written than others I've seen, and do encapsulate quite a bit of the card's meaning.

They are small in size and so easy to shuffle. My one wish: I'd love for the manufacturer to produce a nice case for carrying the cards!

I just couldn't be happier with my precious little deck!

I'm new to LM. This is my 2nd decks of LM. It is so beautiful and attractive. I have found that it is so tune in with my energy. I really appreciated the art work and like the man and woman painting.

Zhi Yuan (Wayne) Wang, Ph.D., is a professor of chemistry in the Department of Chemistry at Carleton University, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and holds a Canada Research Chair in Emerging Organic Materials. Professor Wang’s research interests focus on the study and development of fundamentally important and practically useful organic materials, including nonlinear optical chromophores and polymers, near-infrared chromogenic materials, chiroptical materials, and photocurable polymers.
