Good, but overly detailed

Beasley and Nilkaew have produced a superb textbook on introductory networking, well-suited to the vocational or community college classroom. Its strengths are in its detail, its comprehensiveness, and its step-by-step illustrated walkthroughs of common tasks like making a patch cable or setting up Cisco gear. This is also the book's greatest weakness, though, as it contains much of what I consider to be reference material that a budding technician should NOT be studying when attempting to master key concepts like the OSI model, IP addressing, and Windows command line utilities for the CompTIA exam. In the hands of a qualified instructor, this may be a perfect Network+ textbook... but standing alone, I give it four stars out of five.

Interesting country and unusual mysteries

If you've ever been to New Mexico and Arizona the Leaphorn/Chee stories will really click for you. The terrain and country where the stories are set are as big a challenge as the crimes they investigate. The author obviously spent a lot of time on the details, like the drive times, to keep the story timelines true. (I have a pet peeve about writers that have their characters drive long distances in unrealistic times.) The Navajo culture is not a subject I have studied in depth, so I can't say how accurate it is in the book. It isn't so detailed that there would have been a lot of creative license taken in the description. Everytime I read one of Hillerman's novels I want to go back to New Mexico.

Dark deeds where witches gather

The two Navajo policeman Leaphorn and Chee have an unusual relationship. In this book, as in other earlier books, they investigate separately, and only come together towards the end. Despite a level of annoyance with each other, they respect each other's intelligence and investigative talents. This uncomfortable, unofficial cooperation leads to an interesting narrative technique. The reader gets to follow two investigations instead of one.

The difference in age and temperaments between Leaphorn (gray-haired and deliberate) and Chee (young and rash) adds to the tension.

The action in this book starts out in the desert in a rocky place full of snakes where the Navajos believe witches gather to indulge in unholy rituals and taboo behavior. Someone has been painting the rocks white. Officer Nez, while checking it out, gets killed.

Chee decides to investigate, even though the FBI has jurisdiction, because he feels guilty he wasn’t there to help his fellow officer. Leaphorn is interested because there’s a chance the wrong man may have been arrested for the crime.

There's much more to this murder than meets the eye.

In addition to a multi-layered mystery, there are absorbing subplots involving Leaphorn and Chee's personal lives. Leaphorn, still mourning his wife, meets an intriguing woman his age who's writing a book on the evolution of witchcraft beliefs. Chee is attracted to a young female lawyer who seems to care more about her job than about him.

This is a five-star series. I advocate reading the books in order.

About the Author

William H. Frey is a senior fellow in the Metropolitan Policy program at the Brookings Institution and Research Professor in Population Studies at the University of Michigan. An internationally regarded demographer, his research has been written about in The Economist, New Yorker, and New York Times Magazine. Known for his ability to communicate demographic trends, he is a frequent commentator on broadcast media.

A scientific analysis of current demographic trends sweeping America

An excellent, very authoritative guide on the demographic changes sweeping America, by a top expert in demographics (William H. Frey). In particular, he explains some consequences of these trends, such as why whites tend to Republican these days, and other interesting facts.

His general approach is that diversity is a good thing, and there are some politically correct (PC)/left-leaning opinions expressed here and there, but he's also very frank about the problems faced by some groups; for instance, he doesn't shy away from discussing that Hispanics are uneducated as a group. Overall, the book is very objective; don't be put off by the occasional polite PC language (Frey argues that diversity is critical for economic growth in the future). Any left-leaning conclusions like that are well-supported, but the criticism/concerns are aired as well, so he does maintain an objective stance.

“The Diversity Explosion: How New Racial Demographics are Remaking America” by William Frey is a detailed, thought provoking discussion of how the racial and ethnic lines of society in the USA are changing. The book is chuck full of numbers, graphs, charts, lists all comparing racial and ethnic divisions in the USA. Frey makes forecasts based on the projections of the US Census Bureau.

Frey spends lots of pages discussing the movement of the various peoples to the South and the Southwest, away from the Midwest and Northeast. More pages are spent on the ethnic and racial divisions of many of the major cities and areas in the USA.

The book is well written, but far too many numbers and facts to be easily read. It is better as a reference text on ethnic and racial predictions for politicians and city planners. I found it fascinating, but ended up skimming quite a few pages due to the detailed numeric descriptions.

For those interested in a detailed analysis of changing demographics of the USA, this is a must read.

Mostly Frey feels the growing diversity of the United States is a good thing and a certainty of our future.

Understand the numbers - Make better decisions...

I do have a few years (decades) of experience in the field - and many moons ago I completed most of the coursework for Ph.d. in accounting before deciding academia was not where I wanted to be. I taught the subject at the University level for more than 5 years and now train on this subject internationally. My background also includes working as an auditor and many years wearing the corporate controllers hat. I say this because I want to make clear that this book is not just for beginners, or people without a background in the field.

I recommend this book to everyone. Accounting and finance are not easy subjects especially if you jump in and start with the technical aspects of it. Put simply the better you understand the numbers - the better your business decisions will be. I view this book as providing an excellent foundation - the more you build your core knowledge of the subject the better. Remember the key in business is making better business decisions - don't be overly impressed by people who can spout GAAP at you with in terms you don't understand. The real experts can, and should, be able to translate the rules in a fashion that aids in understanding (1) why the rule is there in the first place, and (2) how it impacts you business and the decisions it makes.

This book is written in a fashion that will not put even non-accountants to sleep and it paints enough pictures with examples of accounting misdeeds to keep it interesting - and to really drive home how seemingly innocuous (in some cases) changes to how transactions are recorded and paint a very different picture of the health of an organization.

If you are in business / work - do yourself, your future and your business a favor by increasing your understanding of the numbers. This book is a great place to start....

Must read for all employees at all levels...

i don't normally write reviews but i have to say this is the best financial book i've ever read...i have spent the past 15 or so years at the coo level with finance reporting to me...and while i'm financially savvy, i have no formal financial education...i'm a believer that finance, like any profession or industry, gets bogged down in its own set of acronyms and language...that in and of itself creates the silos too often found in organizations...sales has it, marketing has it, hr has it, etc...etc...

i always try to break down barriers and most of my time is spent as a translator...truth be told, i've always struggled with translating the financial lingo...this book did it for me and has helped me paint a picture and tell the story behind it so everyone understands...

kudos to the authors!!!

Best place to start your finance education!

Great book to introduce you to the key concepts of finance, as they apply to every person in a company. If you're working in finance, you likely already know this information, but if you're in any other department, it is the perfect book. Easy to read, easy to understand, and I have been able to apply the ideas right away. I wish this was the introductory text in MBA programs - great place to start, as finance is, more than anything, a language. I am in sales and found the ideas a great reminder of how to position the financial value of by products. I encourage anyone who wants to get ahead in their job to read this, and then think about your company and how to apply the ideas. In this day and age, financial intelligence is critical to getting ahead!
