I was unfamiliar with Jane Mai's work, but read an intriguing review for this book on the AV Club. I couldn't put this book down. Mai's thoughtfully illustrated diary entries alternate between hilarious and touching. Really excellent autobio comics.

Easy to understand, gives you a greater appreciation of everything this camera can do.

The only problem that I saw with this particular issue is that, this book has black and white pictures. As the author explains all the functions and features of this camera, he asks that you look at the differences in the quality of the pictures. The problem with that is, the pictures are in black and white. I felt cheated because this book costs $29.00. In saying that, overall, the instructions on using the camera are very good. I rate this book a 4 only because it is well written and very easy reading.

As easy as it claims

This book is great with its workbook format. It really did make it easy to learn the style of calligraphy it teaches. Its format makes it so simple that all you need is a calligraphy marker or pen. The rest is all in the book, from how to instructions, to tracing pages, to practicing, and to decorative projects. I really enjoyed it and also gave a copy to a 10 year old who equally enjoyed it.

I have this workbook and I feel that the content needs to be updated. I photocopy the exercise pages and others but I would prefer a different workbook for Calligraphers. I don't use carpenters pencils...but my Sheafer Fountain Callgraphy pen broad nib works with this book. I think for what I paid for it that I could have gotten a better deal elsewhere.

Good for all Beginners

This is a must have for beginners no matter what age. I photo copied the more complicated letters/symbols some so I could work on them a bit more. You will not be discouraged using this book to start you off with. Purchase Margaret Shepherd's other books for calligraphy, she is a fine teacher of lettering of all types.

A delirious, lyrical, young woman's coming of age. Just brilliant.

This book is so many things. On the one hand the story itself is something of a puzzle. Part of the tension is in figuring out what exactly is going on. But it's also an historical story of US-Philippine relations, and thus a political one that has relevance when looking at the US's current foreign policy. At heart though, it's a young woman's coming of age but a devastating one in the end. Though a challenging, thought provoking story the prose itself is so fluid that I found myself quickly into the first quarter of the book. Highly recommended, particularly for fans of Curtis Sittenfeld, Nabokov, and Banville.

Engaging, fast-paced, fascinating read

While I previously knew next to nothing about Filipino history, Apostol's novel was enlightening and engrossing. The parallels of political unrest with the age-old unrest of teenage girlhood meshed perfectly to create a richly complex drama. Themes of memory and history (both stories we tell ourselves and each other) were particularly resonant, and it made me think of these in relation to ourselves, and what roles we are cast in those stories.

Fantastic

This slow-searing thriller is lyrical, inspired, and absorbing. Gun Dealers' Daughter is fairly representative of Gina Apostol's poetic, extremely well-crafted style. Her other works - particularly Bibliolepsy: A novel (Philippine writers series)(a book that is a lot harder to find but a great read) - have similar qualities, but read this one first for a sense of her top-notch writing. I started reading this book one morning and I could barely put it down.
