These are the punctuations to specific teachings of fearlessness. In The Places That Scare You, Ch�dr�n introduces a host of the compassionate warriors' tools and concepts for transforming anxieties and negative emotions into positive living. Rather than steeling ourselves against hardship, she suggests we open ourselves to vulnerability; from this comes the loving kindness and compassion that are the wellsprings of joy. How do we achieve it? Through meditation, mindfulness, slogans, aspiration, and several other practices, such as tonglen, which is taking in the pain and suffering of others while sending out happiness to all--emphasis on the all. Here she once again presents Tibetan Buddhist wisdom in a clear, engaging, and undiluted way, making it useful and relevant for newcomers and longtime practitioners alike. This time her focus is on bodhichitta, a concept that roughly translates as "open heart" or "awakened mind." As the text points out, this is a term more easily understood than translated, finding its ground in activities that embody compassion, tenderness, and awareness. In a series of short chapters, the reader is introduced to a number of ideas found in Tibetan Buddhist bodhichitta practice and is given practical exercises for daily life. Her clear and simple descriptions guide the reader through these powerful and sometimes difficult practices. I can't say enough about how great this book is. As always I find that I must savor this book. This is not one that you would get, read in a night and move on with your life. If you do that you're missing the opportunity to grow and learn. Pema Chodron is a wise and compassionate teacher. This book teaches to be present with the energy behind the story, behind the drama. It offers an opportunity to become a peaceful happy person capable of making the world around us a better place.

A must read!

I am halfway through this book and it is nothing short of life altering. It is definitely a must read. Especially if you are a survivor. Sometimes we feel the need to numb out what we are feeling in healthy and unhealthy ways, this talks about sitting with those feelings and treating ourselves with compassion.

Good Critical Primer on Marx

I agree with Wolff that reading Marx is very worthwhile. While Marx was in error, I believe, in more than a few of his conclusions, it is amazing that he got so many things right. His and Engels' early understanding of the business cycle would be worth studying them for that alone. Marx's use of class structure in analyzing society politically and economically is also difficult to rationally refute. Class power is the underlying basis of our political and economic structure. Anyone denying that reality either lives in a cocoon, suffers from a severe mental handicap, or is on the payroll of the American Enterprise Institute, Heritage Foundation, etc.

His historicism derived conclusion about the inevitability of Communism does not wear well. Nor does his surplus labor value theory of value gain a whole lot of adherents. Additionally, his rather utopian view that most of humanity's problems would dissolve with the advent of Communism does not appear to have much credibility. Humanity is most certainly a rather difficult and cantankerous lot. Market systems need reform and regulation. Substitute command economies cannot provide adequate pricing mechanisms. The conservatives are right on that one. However, in the cases where there is real monopoly and excessive industrial concentration, government intervention in terms of breaking up the behemoths or nationalizing them appear to be the only practical alternatives.

A good book. It is a little short, and bit too pricey at $20. However, it is definitely a worthwhile read. It's a good primer for the uninitiated and also a good refresher for some of the initiated.

strong overview

This is a nicely written book that gives a strong over-view of Marx and makes a reasonable case for his continuing importance. It neither deifies nor makes a monster of Marx, and does a good job of showing what's useful and what's not in his thinking. I give it only four stars only because it does not really break new ground, but rather does a fine job of summing up the strongest readings of Marx.

A great primer on the timeless philosophy of Karl Marx

This seems like a very fair question-why should anyone bother to wrestle through the endless volumes of Karl Marx's prolific work? After all, communism died with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the demise of the Soviet Union; and, there are few economies today who would abandon the market and mimic the Soviet Union's state-planning.
In this short volume, Jonathan Wolff, of University College London, tries to convince us that studying Marx is worth the time and effort. He does this by analyzing in-depth Marx's entire range of philosophical pursuit-from his thoughts on religion to the "Jewish Question" to the more familiar writings of "The Capital" and the "Communist Manifesto."
This intellectual trip is elegant, well-written, and surprisingly dense. It will certainly appeal to those with little or no background on Karl Marx; it will also likely fascinate veterans of Marxist thinking since Mr. Wolff's reconstruction and assessment of Marx's writings is both trenchant and comprehensive.
What, in the end, of the central question? The case for reading Marx is partly historic since his influence over the twentieth century is towering. But at a more fundamental level, Marx's philosophy is not about communism; in fact, Marx devotes little time analyzing why or how communism would come about and work. Marx's writings are a critique of capitalism and its salient features based on his account of human nature and history. So communism might have died in 1989, but Marx's ideas live on.

Good general introduction to JavaScript promises and other ES6 language features

JavaScript is evolving so we can write asynchronous programs that look more like synchronous programs. Promises and generators have arrived with ES6, and async and await keywords are coming in ES7. It will take time for JavaScript idiom to coalesce around promises, and more time for essential libraries to adapt or be replaced by modern alternatives. During these changes, we will need several books to help us understand and properly apply these new JavaScript language features.

This book about JavaScript promises is more booklet than book, but it is very worthwhile. It is terse and exacting. If you already know JavaScript and you want to learn about promises (and generators, and iterators), you can read this book and try the exercises in a couple of sittings and come away with a good appreciation for what promises adds to JavaScript.

I have wondered whether the Bluebird promise library will retain purpose after ES6 is widely deployed. This book bases several examples on Bluebird, and the answer seems to be that Bluebird provides useful extended features that will continue to make it a valid choice above and beyond the basic promise features now found in JavaScript itself.

We need more books on promises to augment this book. In particular, I would like to spend time in a book with exercises and examples that build on basic concepts and explore when and how to use Bluebird for Node.js server side programming. But as a general introduction to promises that will help us get started, I highly recommend this book.

Concise, Well-written, and Packed with great info

The book offers an in-depth analysis of the JavaScript event loop before delving into the realms of async programming, which should serve as a great introduction for beginners and a good refresher for advanced JavaScript programmers. Daniel also does an amazing job discussing recommended design patterns: The book also has an entire chapter dedicated to explaining parallel, series, waterfall, and more async control flows with easy-to-follow examples, that can be used as reference material in the future. The book also covers the most important parts of Bluebird and jQuery Promises, explaining the nuances with the mark of a person with thorough knowledge on the topic. The book definitely will give you a solid foundation on Promises and async JavaScript. All of this in less than about 100 pages! The book is packed with info and is a must-read. Highly recommend.

Some readers of this slim follow-up to the bestselling The Power of Now may be alarmed that the seemingly wise and gentle Tolle writes in the introduction that his new work "can be seen as a revival for the present age of the oldest form of recorded spiritual teachings: the sutras of ancient India." Tolle explains that the Vedas and Upanishads, as well as the words of the Buddha, the parables of Jesus and the wisdom of the Tao Te Ching can be thought of as sutras in the sense that they share a brevity that "does not engage the thinking mind more than is necessary." Like those great sacred works, Tolle continues, his writings come from inner stillness. "Unlike those ancient sutras, however, they don't belong to any one religion or spiritual tradition, but are immediately accessible to the whole of humanity." Repeating what has become a familiar if no less ominous note in contemporary spiritual life, he adds that this unprecedented accessibility is due to the urgent need for humanity to wake up if we are not to destroy ourselves. It is the stillness that is our common Being-which is the formless container for what is happening in the now-"that will save and transform the world." In the brief chapters that follow, Tolle describes stillness with eloquent economy. Beautiful stand-alone paragraphs offer insight into the defensive nature of the ego versus what he sees as our true being, the attentive, receptive mind behind thought, the spaciousness and peace that blossoms inside when we accept what is, including death. This book saved my life

This book changed my life! I felt like I was spinning out of control and maybe going crazy, then a friend recommended this book to me. I have read it 3 times already and I'm getting a little more out of it each time! This book is for you if you have an obsession with the past and your mind likes to make up stories about the future. If you are looking to quiet your mind and feel good again, this book is for you. Its not an easy read, thus the many times I've already read it. But after I was done with this book, I purchased The New Earth, another book written by Tolle. Love, love, love that book. They go hand in hand. I highly recommend this book!

I would rate this read 6* if I could. This is the third book I have read by Eckhart Tolle. It's not the kind of book you fly through reading. Take your time with it, a few pages or a topic at a time, and give some thought to what is said. It is a powerful read and takes time to "digest". This book may help you find calm, peace, and acceptance in your life. VERY highly recommended.

Easy, powerful read

Well, I'm a huge Eckhart Tolle fan. "The Power of Now" is one of my all time favorite books. "A New Earth" is also a great book. I think this book (Stillness Speaks) is my favorite read of all of them, though. By far the easiest book of his to read. "Power of Now" and "A New Earth" are so deep they took me a long time to get through as I needed to stop, take breaks, let things sink in. "Stillness Speaks" has many "aha" moments, as anything by Tolle most likely will, but the book itself is short, the chapters are short, and the writing within the chapters is no more than a paragraph or two within each section. Very easy, powerful read. Everyone should read this book, it's great.

Mixed bag

[[VIDEOID:mo2UDLHZCGRA23P]]Splash 12 for me is a mixed bag to the Splash watercolour series.

This volume features 125 paintings from 100 artists. The variety is great. There are lots of style and you can see the differences in standard as well.

Some are really beautiful watercolour pieces with gorgeous details and wonderful colours. There are also some abstract pieces which are not too bad, except I don't know what they are drawing. I prefer more representational art. A few are not quite up to the mark in terms of technique, colours and composition, especially when surrounded by outstanding pieces.

The short artist commentary for each piece is always interesting to read. Good thing is quotes are no longer printed on the paintings, like they do in Volume 11.

The reproduction quality for a few pieces aren't quite good. They are probably scaled up larger than the original paintings. They are not pixelated but a bit soft.

I think the standard for the Splash series has dropped a bit. I can't quite feel the excitement and surprise from each new page.

I was a little disappointed in this newest installment from Rachael Wolf. I realize the economy is taking it's toll on everyone but the paper used didn't show off the incredible artwork as it did in past books. It seemed there were more paintings by the same artists this time too but their work is always breath-taking. I have all 12 of the Splash books and look at them for inspiration. This is a wonderful series of watercolor books.

I bought Splash 12 because I had purchased the first 11 books before that. I love the Splash series. The Ted Nuttall cover was a gem. Having recently studied with him it is great to have at least 4 of his works featured in the book as well as some others I know such as John Salminen, Russell Jewell and Linda Baker. Other paintings featured are recognizable from the watercolor societies show catalogues. But many are unknown. This book is pretty traditional and then Rachel Wolf threw in some innovative work like Fealing Lin, Naomi Campbell (not the model) and wonderful Ken Goldman. Henry Fukuhara's painting inclusion was a bonus. He painted it in his 90's while blind. If you like art, own this book. Great quality. And don't be like me and just flip through looking at the paintings. It took a second or third time looking at this volume to read the comments by the artists.

Not your average mixology book!

Your average cocktail/bartender book is usually just the result of somebody gathering together as many recipes as they can find, prefacing it with the obligatory "how to stock your home bar" chapter, then selecting "File / Print..." Is it any wonder then that people these days are confused as to what a Martini really is?
Thankfully, Gary Regan has shown us that a mixology book can be far more then we have come to expect.
In "The Joy of Mixology", Gary lays out for us the results of what obviously has been many years of research into what cocktails really are, and how to make them properly. First he covers the common topics such as history, bartending, garnishes, glassware, but with far more interesting information then you most likely have seen elsewhere. Mr. Regan then dives into laying out the various styles of cocktails and mixed drinks, and how to understand them in ways that focus on the proper and well-balanced construction of each style. There is a lot of meat in how he organizes his lists, and a wealth of information behind their proper construction.
Cocktails really don't need to be as confusing as they seem to be to most people. This book goes a long way in not only making sense of the large array of cocktail selections available, but also in bringing to light the potentials of a "Quality" cocktail experience.

This is THE BOOK

I'm surprised that this book doesn't have more reviews - I am usually too preoccupied or lazy to take the time to write Amazon reviews, but in this case I had to speak! This really is THE BOOK if you're looking to learn the art of mixology, the craft of the cocktail, the joy of boozing it up in a delicious and debonair way! I am rather obsessive with the whole mixing drinks thing - and an obsessive buyer of cocktail books - but the only two that really matter - the only two that are ESSENTIAL and not just a novelty to own - are this book and Dale Degroff's the Craft of the Cocktail. Buy others if you have the inclination, but if you're wondering what to buy to learn, or to enjoy, or to be able to say you have the definitive books on the subject - buy those two. And believe me, I've tried out enough of the recipes to KNOW what I'm talking about!

About the Author
Stephen Marshak is professor of geology at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where he is also the director of the School of Earth, Society, and Environment. He holds an A.B. from Cornell University, an M.S. from the University of Arizona, and a Ph.D. from Columbia University. Steve's research interests lie in structural geology and tectonics. This work has taken him into the field on a number of continents. Steve loves teaching and has won his college's and university's highest teaching awards. In addition to research papers and Earth Science, Steve has also authored Earth: Portrait of a Planet, Essentials of Geology, and has co-authored the Laboratory Manual for Introductory Geology, Earth Structure: An Introduction to Structural Geology and Tectonics, and Basic Methods of Structural Geology.

Really good to understanding an introduction to geology for my Dynamic ...

Really good to understanding an introduction to geology for my Dynamic Earth class. The questions on the back of each chapter helps understand what are the important points of a particular chapter. Text wise, it is very descriptive to the point that I understand very complex material I have not encounter before in consideration of Earth dynamics. Detailed images are also key to explaining complex material, but there was one diagram (pg.99 Figure 4.13 (b) ) that was little bit off as pointed by my professor. However this does not deter my appreciation of the textbook helping understand and pass my Dynamic Earth class, would recommend it to any one taking any introduction to geology course.

Great Read!

A great read - I was sorry to see it end. The story line was suspenseful; the characters were "real" and easy to connect with; and the attention to detail regarding the Caliphate and radical Muslim perspective was highly educational. One nagging question kept coming to my mind as I read: how much of what Le Gallo was writing about is real? One has to wonder ....

You'll enjoy this. I highly recommend The Caliphate.

How do we recognize the enemy?

In the fall of 2009, a Baptist preacher in North Carolina announced that his congregation would sponsor a book burning. His "holy fire" would consume copies of the Bible that were not the King James version. Radical fundamentalist? Early in The Caliphate, author Andre LeGallo has one of his characters murder his daughter, "..in the name of Allah." What kind of religion is that? Are these two incidents believable? Former director of the CIA, Peter Goss says LeGallo's tale is "--too believable to ignore."

Steve Church is en route to Morocco on business. He represents a company that specializes in counter-terrorism. Steve's father is a retired CIA man (Do they ever really retire?). Steve's itinerary includes a stop in France to see an old friend of his father who just happens to be stepping on the toes of an influential radical fundamentalist. Only this guy isn't burning books. We meet all the essential characters in the first few chapters including a romantic interest for our hero. Even though some of the situations and plot devices are a bit expected, they're all still so, well, believable. Credit LeGallo's skill at weaving fiction with current events so convincingly that it's hard to tell if you're reading a novel or a feature story in Esquire.

LeGallo's experience and education lend an air of authority as well as a convincing authenticity to his writing. After thirty years with the CIA and world travel, he's been there and done that. He also advises readers that the "Islamic content has been double-checked by others with better academic credentials." The characters he has created and the situations in which they find themselves serve as a warning to the world that any religion can be poisonous. During the Viet Nam era, our military had difficulty discerning the enemy. Today, it is the same in the Middle East. Imagine the frustration of a foreign force coming to the United States and trying to distinguish a friendly Methodist from one who was willing to detonate and die with a bomb inside Walmart? Or in Northern Ireland, does a member of the IRA appear any differently than a non-combatant? How do we hope to survive with a "live and let live" credo, when there are dangerous people out there who will kill you simply because you aren't a member of their tribe?

The Caliphate is a fast moving adventure of one civilian's journey through a mine-filled world where zealots on either side of the issues act and react quickly, often making decisions in the blink of an eye with barely a tip of the iceberg visible. The Caliphate serves as a compelling warning to the real world and challenges us with a question. How can the events in our world today conclude with a "Hollywood ending"?

Would I buy The Caliphate? Yes. It is the first book I've read involving the Middle East and Muslims since 9/11. I'm glad I started with it and I recommend it highly.

THE CALIPHATE, Important Reading

This is a must read novel for anyone wanting to better understand the roots of radical Islam and the culture and history of the Middle East. Written by a now retired career CIA operations officer who spent years in the Arab world, THE CALIPHATE is cast as an espionage novel. The tradecraft and tools of the spy trade are authentic and woven into a story that is fast moving, gripping and realistic. More importantly, the novel is a vehicle for exposing forcefully the seriousness of the radical Jihadist threat facing much of the world including the true non-radical practitioners of the Islamic faith. Andre LeGallo is not only a former CIA operations officer, he was also National Intelligence Officer for Counterterrorism. He knows his stuff. Summary: a good and important read.
