Poorly written + mistakes

I have never encountered such a lackluster text... The overall writing style is scattered and vague, making it hard to understand without going over certain passages more than a couple of times. It's filled with grammatical errors and incorrect problem answers, as well. The professor of my genetics course kept having to give the class a heads-up about incorrect questions/answers, or re-explain parts of the text due to unnecessary confusion. Even the solutions manual gives the wrong answers to a ridiculous amount of problems! Makes you wonder about the revision process this book went through.

Philosophical works include seven extant major compositions and a number of others; and some lost. There is also poetry, some original, some as translations from the Greek.

This is a smoothly done work. The author, a product of the older German school of history, has been expertly translated here. This book reads easily, and the reader quickly gets swept up into the interesting and insightful text. This a fairly straight-forward bio of Alexander. Those wanting to know his sexual escapades should consult more modern works. Here such is only hinted at.

The main stength of this book seems to be its comparative analysis. The author shows how Alexander evolved in his strategy of conquest. He is also skillful at showing how he managed his various titles as ruler, being Hegemon to the Greeks, and Divine King to the Asiatics. There is limited discussion of the great battles of Alexander, although reference is made to the Oblique Order which he developed from Epamiadas of Thebes. The early chapter concerning Philip also sheds light on his accomplishments and how they would influence his son.

The concluding chapters discuss the legacy of Alexander. Useful reference is made to how Caeser planned to model his three year campaign of conquest on Alexander in the East before he was assassinated. Tthe legacy of Alexander with the Romans is also interesting. There is also a good deal of how the Diodachi Succession wars developed, and how these various rulers spread Hellanism throughtout their empires. Alexander can be seen on many different levels. He is many things to different people. Here we find a pretty unbiased account, which is on the whole favorable toward his accomplishments and deeds. Readers more familar with recent bios may wish to consult this work to get a clear, concise and uncluttered account.

A good general introduction to Alexander.

I have read a number of books on Alexander the Great and finally decided to read Wilcken's biography on Alexander since it is cited in so many other works. While the book covers all the high points and is generally favorable in its treatment and view of Alexander, it fails to give any real detail about the man, his life or his military exploits. If you know little of Alexander you will find the highpoints here. If you are looking for something new, the only information that I had not seen before was the author's speculation about Alexander's future plans; and the author's discussion of the legacy of Alexander. There is an interesting discussion in the introduction about earlier Alexander biographies.

A fine introduction to both Tolkien & classic fantasy

This was one of the first books to delve into Tolkien's now-classic tale, and in many ways, it's still one of the best. By exploring the roots of both Tolkien's work & the fantasy genre overall, Carter provides much-needed perspective ... to say nothing of having introduced an entire generation of fantasy readers & future fantasy writers to the masters of the field. I still recall the excitement of learning about Lord Dunsany & Wiliiam Morris for the first time, and my appetite for their work was whetted by the brief samples Carter so tantalizingly provided to his readers!
The entire Ballantine Adult Fantasy series so wonderfully developed & edited by Carter can be seen as an outgrowth of this seminal work; for that reason alone, it's deserving of praise. But it's also enjoyable & informative reading on its own merits. Carter wrote at the height of the intial Tolkien craze & much of that exhilaration & delight is reflected here. His prose is deceptively easy-going & always accessible: he's clearly writing about a living man & his living work, not the ponderous monument so many writers have since made of him. Yes, there are more detailed (and more accurate) books about Tolkien, but this one truly conveys the pleasures of masterful & classic fantasy. Recommended!

Read it and you'll know why fantasy is now awful

Lin Carter's book is a tour through the literary world of Europe in the last thousand years touching on Norse Epics, warrior tales and the Spanish adventure series parodied by Don Quixote. It's amazing in it breadth even if its depth is shallow. As she goes over the literature that influenced Tolkein in his epic you will understand why you can't read The Lord of the Rings just once and why there's so much going on (even in those boring appendices of Tolkein). You will also understand why you haven't read a fantasy book for years.
Tolkein was a genius. But everyone else imitates Tolkein these days. There are some exceptions - Tanith Lee, Stephen King, Barry Hughart but the Terry Brooks and Robert Jordans of the world set their books in that pseudo medeival tripe you know there's something missing. This book explains why. Tolkein had decades of research and pure love behind him. The other fantasy writers can only imitate Tolkein.
Buy this book when it comes out new and give it as a gift to all your friends. You'll be happy you did. And then go through it for reading suggestions - as it provides the most invaluable reading list since Stephen King's Danse Macabre chapter.
