The Perfect Starter Book

The book covers a lot of bases for the newbie. Scott uses his project manager experience to lay out a logical, rationale approach to this business.

The book contains a lot of useful advice based on Scott's experience running a business and research on the business. Examples include how to get started, what to expect, realistic profit calculations, reviews and recommendations of vending machines, where to purchase them, the pros and cons of candy choices, where to purchase candy, etc.

He thinks like a business person and provides the reader with his experiences from the perspective of his successful business.

The book is an excellent read and is highly recommended to anyone thinking of getting into the business or curious about the candy vending machine business.

I thoroughly enjoy this book. Each time I pick it up, I get something new from it. I mostly love that It is written in layman's terms so anyone can understand it from start to finish. In my opinion, it covers all areas from A to Z. It informs of all positives and even of the negatives. The author is highly knowledgeable about the content and has an excellent demeanor as well. It lists all the nuts and bolts of going into this from novice to expert levels. He gives excellent advice on business in other areas as well. I highly recommend this book-even if you are only curious about becoming a Confectioner; everyone can grasp something from this book!

I have recently been bouncing the idea around of getting into the vending industry as a way to bring in extra cash flow and possibly an escape for the future. This book really laid out all all the facts for me.... I have decided and will be moving forward with my vending venture!!!

About the Author
Robert Jurmain received an A.B. in Anthropology from UCLA and a Ph.D. in Biological Anthropology from Harvard. He taught at San Jose State University from 1975 to 2004 and is now Professor Emeritus. During his teaching career, he taught courses in all major branches of physical anthropology, including osteology and human evolution, with the greatest concentration in general education teaching for introductory students. His research interests are skeletal biology of humans and non-human primates, paleopathology, and paleoanthropology. In addition to his three textbooks, which together have appeared in 30 editions, he is the author of STORIES FROM THE SKELETON: BEHAVIORAL RECONSTRUCTION IN HUMAN OSTEOLOGY (1999, Gordon Breach Publishers), as well as numerous articles in research journals.

Lynn Kilgore earned her Ph.D. from the University of Colorado, Boulder, where she now holds an affiliate faculty position. Her primary research interests are osteology and paleopathology. She has taught numerous undergraduate and graduate courses in human osteology, primate behavior, human heredity and evolution, and general physical anthropology. Her research focuses on developmental defects as well as on disease and trauma in human and great ape skeletons.

Wenda Trevathan is Regents Professor (Emerita) of Anthropology at New Mexico State University, where she taught from 1983 to 2009. She is a biological anthropologist whose research focuses on the evolutionary and biocultural factors underlying human reproduction, including childbirth, maternal behavior, sexuality, and menopause. Her primary publications include works on the evolution of childbirth and evolutionary medicine. Her most recent book is ANCIENT BODIES, MODERN LIVES: HOW EVOLUTION HAS SHAPED WOMEN'S HEALTH (2010, Oxford University Press). She has taught courses in physical anthropology, nutritional anthropology, medical anthropology, evolutionary medicine, and anthropology of reproduction.

Russell L. Ciochon is a leading paleoanthropologist specializing in primate and human evolution in Asia, as well as the geochronology of Asian Plio-Pleistocene sites. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, and teaches at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, where he is Chair of the Department of Anthropology. He teaches courses in hominin and non-human primate evolution, as well as primate behavior, ecology, and functional anatomy. Besides co-authoring more than one hundred technical articles, he has also co-written two popular books: DRAGON BONE HILL: AN ICE AGE SAGA OF HOMO ERECTUS (2004, Oxford University Press) and OTHER ORIGINS: THE SEARCH FOR THE GIANT APE IN PREHISTORY (1990, Bantam Books).

Excellent tale of intrigue

In the 16th century England was at a crossroads. She couldn't possibly hope to match the sheer man power or size of the fleets at sea and hope to dominant world affairs. England would always end up playing catch up with Spain, France and other European powers with better resources. Intelligence and spying seemed to offer the key to help the islands in the Atlantic to dominate the world of politics. Queen Elizabeth turned to people like Sir Francis Walsingham.

Walsingham may not have invented spying or been the ultimate spymaster but he honed it to a fine art as did others in Queen Elizabeth's court. This was the time when monarchy was absolute rule after all and anything hinting at dissent was met swiftly and usually resulted in death. Author Stephen Budiansky has made this period fascinating by grafting a breezy style to this story. While people think they know a lot about the Elizabethan era in England, usually it's bits and pieces gleaned from studying Shakespeare or a course in college on the history of England during this time. The spying and doublecrosses that went on during this era are largely unknown to the average reader and, as a result, this may prove enlightening and entertaining.

This isn't written for academics. Like a lot of history books written for popular consumption this book escapes the dry, stilted text that makes you feel like you're buried in undergraduate classes again and it does bring to light an era largely forgotten by others and it makes it exciting. Based on what I know of the period, Budiansky does a good job with his scholarship and manages to make history---gasp!---entertaining as well as enlightening.

Great book for an undergrad or the casual reader!

Having just read the review by the esteemed Lisa Jardine (her "Worldly Goods: A New History of the Renaissance" is a great book)for the Washington Post, I felt compelled to respond.

She's rather harsh with it I think. I don't think Budiansky's history is any less accurate just because he is writing to an audience wider than us nerdy historians. It's just a lot less technical. I'm sure she misses all the footnotes and endnotes that we tend to live for, but I think that his narrative style gives his subject life and makes it a lot more fun to read than most history that is written for historians.

I think this book is a great introduction into the world of Elizabethan politics and espionage. Budiansky's work should not be compared to one such as Conyers Read's (still a great historian if a bit outdated), for they have completely different audiences for which they are writing. That said, perhaps Jardine was trying to say as much when she cited "Shakespeare in Love", but I think that's an unfair comparison... Budiansky takes FAR fewer liberties with fact.

So, if you are a non-historian, a casual reader, or if you're looking for a book for your undergraduate students, I recommend this book. If you are a history junky, and/or trying to find an authoritative work on Walsingham for graduate studies, you'll probably only want to use this book as a quick summary (it's an easy/fast read) of the carreer of Mr. Secretary Walsingham, if at all. There are certainly more authoritative books out there, but few as entertaining to read. And shouldn't history be fun to read?

Entertaining History of Walsingham

Stephen Budiansky's "Her Majesty's Spymaster" is a very readable popular history of Sir Francis Walsingham, Queen Elizabeth I's personal secretary and informal chief of intelligence. Written in a breathless novelistic style, Budiansky captures the atmospherics and endless intigues of the Tudor period in a way designed to capture the interest of the average person without background in the era. He succeeds in making the religious struggles and dynastic wars of this distant period accessible to the modern reader.

Walsingham was unusual in his time in that he served in a high position in government without having come from the nobility. His rise from what would now be termed a middle class upbringing was based on education, talent, and good service. Walsingham turned out to be a superbly capable spymaster who could get and keep secrets and protect the fortunes of his Queen and country. Walsingham was especially effective in managing the English rivalry with France, including the dangerous problem of the status of Mary Queen of Scots, and the running conflict with Spain.

Budiansky is less than effective in making the case that Walsingham gave birth to modern espionage. Walsingham learned his craft from his mentor and predecessor, Lord Burghley, and his success was due less to inventing new methods of espionage than to making fewer mistakes than his contemporaries in executing already widely-known tactics and techniques.

This book is recommended to the casual reader looking for an introduction to the intrigues of the Elizabeath period. The close student of the history of the period will find no information that has not been covered in more detail elsewhere.

A helpful supplement to the online Zotero documentation

This book offers a nice overview of how Zotero works and provides more detail than the online video tutorials. What I found particularly helpful about the book is the way the volume presents helpful ideas for organizing collections and Subcollections. These including ideas for tags, how to relate citations to one another and sharing information. I was already using Zotero when I bought this book and I was an Endnote user since the 1990s. I like Zotero and I added this book to my personal library because I didn't feel I was accessing the software's full potential. This sense of not seeing all of Zotero's capabilities was indeed the case. Through the book I found icons that I had not realized were available, for example.

This book is an updated, expanded, and revised version of an earlier one called The PK Zone that came out in 2003, but only covered the research up to the year 2000. The title change is because of a shift in parapsychology away from the older words of "psychokinesis" and "telekinesis" to the more accurate and inclusive "mind-matter interaction." This is because not everything that gets lumped here involves movement (the true meaning of "kinesis"). Thus, in addition to traditional topics such as psychic healing, teleportation, and levitation, there is also the way matter transforms or materializes from nowhere, the body becomes immune to fire, metal layers melt, and humans interact with machines paranormally.

The writing for this book is more casual and with less academic double talk than it was for "The PK Zone." I explain in the introduction that this isn't because I wallow the stories wholesale, but for ease of reading. The quotes mostly gone in the first two-thirds of the book because it was such a nightmare getting all the copyright permissions for "Suicide: What Really Happens in the Afterlife?" that I swore never to go through that again. And while it does mean you don't get the flavor of the original tales in their own (sometimes archaic) words, it has the advantage of being easier to read. In addition, I took months converting the citations to unobtrusive endnotes.

Other than an improved style, the biggest change is in the middle section of the book, with the addition of nearly another decade's worth of research. There's all some new older material, as well, thanks to the new online parapsychology library giving me access to material I had not been able to read before. In addition, I added some new topics, such as the materialization or transformation of matter and staring studies (DMILS research) and an extensive index. Finally, the added years have slightly changed how I understand these phenomena.

This book is not for the casual reader. It is unabashedly intended as a textbook, drawing together in one place as best it can all the stories, research (both experimental and experiential) and theories about mind-matter interaction. It is meant to be a complete resource book on mind-matter interaction for your library. Given how much work it was, I do not expect to update it again.

She is a member of the Parapsychological Association, the Society for Psychical Research and the Society for Scientific Exploration. She lives in California.

Splendid Summary of Psychokinetic Research

Written by a medical doctor, Mind Matter Interaction tackles a subject of psychokinesis with scientific rigor perfectly balanced with the human desire to understand our mysterious universe.

Carefully organized into historical and scientific research sections, Mind Matter Interaction first takes readers on a historical and cross-cultural tour through religious and spiritual accounts of such things as: levitation, stigmata, teleportation, bilocation, poltergeists, inedia, luminosity, mediumship, fire-immunity, hemography, and materialization and transformation of matter. After reading fascinating real-life examples of such a wide variety of mind matter interaction, the second major section of this book covers research and theory. Containing one of the most thorough reviews of current scientific study into the field of psychokinetic mind-matter interaction, some of the areas covered include: metal-bending, anomalous photography, random number generators, and poltergeists. The third major section of the book covers experiential research and tips for achieving a conducive atmosphere through altered states of consciousness, dissociation from ego identity, suspension of intellect, playfulness, peak emotion, focused awareness, trust in the process, and openness to the experience.

I love the way this book contains just the right amount of information to whet the reader's appetite for learning more. Pamela Rae Heath has created a first-rate psychokinetic primer which should be required reading for every high school and college general studies program. I've read the three works prior to this release and am anticipating the(shut yo mouth) outta this one! Will do a more detailed review when this next journey is complete. If you haven't read the other three, do so, and this as well, for they are "must reads" for our babies. The book begins with Aristotle's speculation that the brain served to cool the blood after it left the heart, then continues with various studies and experiments since performed that re vealed the true functions of the nervous system. Chapters cover the anatomy of the brain, mental disorders and brain dys function, workings of the brain sections and nerves, brain ``sides,'' and sleep. Il lustrations are nicely detailed black-and- white drawings, both anatomical diagrams and portraits. However, the diagram of the autonomic nervous system, which is divided into ``sympathetic'' and ``para sympathetic'' functions, is confusing, as the two terms are never defined. The writ ing is interesting, readable, and lively. Be cause of its brevity and style, the book is not packed with information like Larry Kettelkamp's The Human Brain (Enslow, 1986) or the Silversteins' World of the Brain (Morrow, 1986), but as introductory material it is a good additional title. I was worried about the end of the world

Two days ago I found out that the world will end on 21st December 2012 which is a tremendous concern to me, a friend got me this book to take my mind of matters and to help prevent me from fixating on the date 21/12/2012. I'm only a couple of pages in and I have to say I've still got the 21st December 2012 on my mind, maybe the later sections of the book will divert my attentions.

I hope nothing happens as I've become rather attached to the world.

Another VBScript book that is Lacking

How many VBScript books have you picked up that completely skip explaining the Windows Script Host and VBScript environment? They immediately jump into having you write scripts without even explaining the scripting environment, something that is Crucial to learning VBScript. This is another of those books.

This book has no information on the WSH (Windows Script Host), objects or methods, when and why to use the various WSH objects and methods, and there is only haphazard information on syntax. You can't even find this information in the appendices.

The author takes you through writing VBScripts, almost from page one, and only gives the briefest of explanations of what you are doing. For example, in the second chapter of the book, you are presented with a multiline script that includes the following:

Set objWMIService=SetObject("winmgmts") _

& .ExecQuery _

("SELECT = FROM Win32_Process")

If you never worked with Windows Script Host or VBScript, would you have any idea what this is? Or why you are using it? The author gives a 2 sentence explanation, and then jumps right into something else.

If you are new to VBScript, and are looking for a book to teach you about VBScript and WSH, this book is not for you. If you are an experienced VBScript writer, you might find some tidbit of useful information in this book. This book, sadly, does not teach you VBScript, and would be of no real use to someone who already knows VBscript.

Don't buy it.

Good learning tool and sample script reference

This book does not cover the in-depth mechanics behind the scripting language.. Stuff most people find their eyeballs rolling around in their head while trying to read. Instead it takes the 'common man' approach and presents admin scripting in a practical, easy to implement way. I recommend this book for admins who are not very experienced with vbscript and want to be able to learn and produce workarble scripts quickly. It also comes with a CD of sample scrips, labs and a ebook copy of the book.
